    1983 GS550ES Idles At 4/5000Rpm At Idle

    Hey Everyone,

I tried to find something on the forum about this but since the 550es has the 2 barrel carbs id figure id make a separate post. For the past two days ive torn the carbs apart twice and thoroughly cleaned them and checked everything to make sure they are in functioning order. In fact when i opened the float bowls they looked brand new. When I test drove this bike a week ago it ran decent and certainly didnt idle at 4-5000 rpm and have the idle hang after revving it. When i pulled the spark plugs they were and still are very dry and are somewhat discolored (white tinge). I replaced the old plugs with new ones and ran it again and noticed that the exhaust pipes are getting ridiculously hot after running for a few minutes. I am assuming the engine is running lean and i dont want to run the engine much more than i have to because compression is at 170-175 per cylinder which is amazing for a 40 year old bike and i dont want to burn up the engine. Does anyone know what could be causing the issue if after making sure the carbs were clean and that all the vacuum lines were attached that it rockets up to 4-5k rpm.

    I have tried:
    -Cleaning the carbs
    -checking vacuum lines
-Greasing the boots where they connect to the air box
    -New spark plugs
-Checking the spark plugs have spark

The only thing i havent done is do the spray test around the boots with carb cleaner because i dont want to strip the nice black paint off the engine. I seriously doubt the boots are a problem because the bike sat in a climate controlled room for 35 years and they feel like brand new. Plus the bike did not run like this a week ago. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, im pretty much at a wall here.

Did you change the intake boot O-rings?

Its the boots o rings most likely. Replacing cured my idle woes.

Exactly how did you clean the carbs? What you describe sounds like a vacuum leak.
