    And it's not like they're in bum puck nowhere.... { Trust me on this, I live in B.C . I know where bum puck nowhere is } ... A bullet train runs through the town and it's only an hour and a half from Tokyo .....

    I recall reading about an American and his Japanese/american wife who bought home in a small town in Japan. They were quiet pleased with their traditional multi-generational home with large garden, complete with antiques and furniture. The former family which had resided there for 2-300 yrs had no interest in taking their extra belongings to Tokyo.

    Very inexpensive apparently as the link pointed out because of a falling population and young people prefer moving to the big city as they always done. If you have a job you can remote in as all my kids are doing you can live anywhere, me being old school hands on that becomes a problem not knowing the language. Problems well at my age is health, many of those small centres don't have adequate health resources that become more important as we age.
