    no danger to the engine if its on its side? my exhausts look good so maybe ill try removing one.

    no danger. Just don't flip the bike more than horizontal otherwise oil from transmission or cardan may come out. Even at 45 degree angle work is much easier.
    Watch or take off the battery if lead-acid with an overflow pipe.

    I was surprised to see that the GS650G/L oil pan gasket is NLA. ( at Suzuki). I double checked at Partzilla, which seems to stay right up to date on availability. I had bought a couple of them late 2019. Evidently they still have the early '81 cam cover gasket, but the much more common later '81 and on cam cover gasket is also now NLA.

    indeed. I wanted to check and maybe adjust my valves and just finding the gasket is nearly impossible, or massively overpriced.
