I'm happy to see Rossi retire. He's been embarrassing himself for the last couple of seasons and all things must pass. He's been so good for so long it's difficult to see him struggle for mid pack finishes at best.

Talk is he's going to go auto racing. None of my business of course but I think it would be super cool if he focused on his VR46 race team and became an integral day to day leader. That can't happen if he's off racing cars though. Oh well.

Sounds more like he's going to be running his VR 46 team and training camp.

He just got a $150 million euro infusion from a Saudi backer

Edit: I just read he's going to race sports cars. I always thought he would go to rally cars

The end of a fantastic journey and career, personally I don't think he embarrassed himself in anyway the fact being he was so successful that the last couple of years have seemed a bit disappointing as we all expected him to go on in the manor we are accustomed to seeing him.
i don't blame him in anyway for carrying on if he was still enjoying the racing, good on him.

Was he being a douche or simply no longer one of the best? If the latter, I don't know how that's embarrassing? (Or am I missing a nuance of the english language here? Non-native speaker.)

I'm a huge Rossi fan and would love to see him win again. He's considered the greatest racer of all time by many for a good reason. The last couple of seasons his results have fallen off a cliff though. He got 1 podium last year and finished 15th in the standings. His previous low finish was his first season when he finished in 9th. This year he's had 0 podiums and he's in 19th place in the standings.

Maybe embarrassing himself wasn't the best choice of words, but it's not far off in my view. The time has come for him to step aside and I'm glad he's recognized it.

I think his stated graphic for continuing or retiring is logical, that when he's no longer competitive he would retire. His race results are poor this year, a younger man would have more seasons to recover, not a racer over 35.
Finishing out his contract for this year is honorable, best for Yamaha.

                  End of an era.

A much overused term but entirely appropriate in this case. Thanks for the ride, Mr. Rossi.

Rossi has been faster at many tracks than he's ever been. I don't call that embarrassing

Rossi is in 19th place out of 23 riders that have scored points in the series this year. For a guy that's won 9 championships that's embarrassing.

Maybe you're standards are higher than mine. He still makes millions for MotoGP and Dorna. He's still fast. He still has legions of
fans. I don't think anything he's done is embarrassing.
