Why do Brits, and their colonies, refer to every electronic ignition as a CDI?

Canada does seem to generally be an exception.

How did this become an accepted part of speech?

From what I see, it seems to be an American thing, where the CDI originated, as far as I know.
CDI ignition was a definite upgrade on big Yank iron, and it just caught on from there, down through the decades.

Huh. I've experienced it mainly from guys with experience in the auto world coming into motorcycles. Can't say I've noticed it more from any one nationality more than another.

I always assumed that I knew what cdi was the abbreviation for but, now that I thought about , I don't.

Yeah, it drives me nuts when those here continually refer to the CDI on their GS. No GS was ever manufactured with a CDI.

You're probably right. Although, it isn't uncommon for people to talk about things they know nothing about. lol

i don't think you can point the finger at any one market over the others. I've seen TCI ignition miscalled CDI in US magazines - and Haynes manuals (British)

CDI was new, hot and cool - at the same time, lol. No- one could work out what TCI stood for

You can imagine the Fonze saying "Yeah, my bikes got CDI man" But not, I think, saying it has TCI.
