Hi Everyone! Just joined up. Referred here by Steve Cruickshank at the
Suzuki GS550 Owners and Renovators Club. Oops...big type! I own a 1981 GS550T purchased new way back then. Having starter problems right now. Think it's a dirty or defective button. Also need to find out how to open the fuse box!

Welcome! I'm pretty new myself but I've already been very pleased with the community. Lots of helpful folks here and it's a pretty niche forum so not a lot of noise to sort through.

Having some starter button problems myself (works ok but has to be pressed weirdly/hard like the contacts are dirty) so I'll be following your journey since my bike is not in a state to attempt to start at the moment.

Definitely start a thread over in the electrical section and someone will almost certainly be able to help you out.

You will find the following in the Cliffnote sectio, but i will make it easy.

When planning to take the starter button apart, (or any other handlebar controls)
First get a large, clear, plastic bag.

Place it so that the bag covers the entire area you want to work on, and then start.\
All your work should be done INSIDE the bag.

It is a very simple thing, but will keep all your parts in one place, which can avoid time wasted while searching for lost springs or bearings, or just wondering if something was lost when you get confused ..

"81" GS550T purchased new, Your bike is 40 yrs. old, no doubt you're one of us old ferts. Working on these tiny parts, after all these birthdays, these parts are much easier to lose & much harder to find when we do. argon's idea seems reasonable. Welcome & good luck.

HI. Welcome. This may sound lazy but I'd try spraying some PB Blaster in to that switch area and working it a bit.

                  Welcome....

Don't forget to check the brushes on the starter motor.
Last time I had an intermittent start issue on the GS, it needed new brushes.
