    '77 gs750 not shifting

I have this '77gs 750 I bought not running and got it running a few years ago and we went through the gears I think on the center stand. then I pulled the covers and started making it pretty for sale. I got almost everything back on and got it running then got the brakes working and now it's in neutral and the shifter is seized up. Seems like the shaft wants to turn but it wont rotate up or down.. could I have jammed up something putting the covers on? It seemed straight forward going back together.

“then I pulled the covers and“

if you removed the clutch cover, the shifter indexing shaft might have fallen out of position and locked up.

One other issue I've seen is that if you use a shonky aftermarket gasket (or make a gasket) that's too thin, the little retention nubbin inside the cover that locates the shifter shaft so it can't move very far horizontally will bind against the shifter shaft.
