    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

After applying throtle the revs are slow to return to idle speed.

When my 1980 GS550ET revs it takes a while for the revs to return to idle speed.

Have you done any work to the bike ie. cleaned the carbs, replace needed o-rings, tightened and sealed all air leaks? :-$

Textbook sign of an air leak.

Fix it or your engine will run lean, overheat, and die horribly.
 
Go to BassCliff's website and download the Air Intake Repair PDF. Although it refers to an 850, the work is very similar to your bike.
 
Does your twist grip snap back when released ?
If not , your cable(s) need lube or re-routing .
Check the easy stuff first .

Recheck all your boot clamps.
These are very easy to overlook.
Often they feel very tight but aren't.
Just tightening them a few more turns can make the difference, because
the same thing happened to me, lol.

Then check your airbox for leaks.
You might have to goto Lowes or where-ever and buy some weather sealing strips, usually in 10ft small bags and which are adhesive on One side, just find a good size.... Since the GSes use different styles of airboxes, and I don't know what yours looks like.

If that doesn't do it, it's gotta be your your Intake Boot O-rings, or your Boots are simply too worn and hardened, thus cannot properly hold air tight.
(which requires you take the carbs off.)

But it's probably just one of the First Two up top.

But either way, "RPM's hanging" almost always means Air leak, lol.

So check a few of those out, and let us know.
 
Didn't see it mentioned, but make sure the vacuum hose from the carbs to the fuel valve is in good condition and connected.

Hey...I've tried lubing my cables (with WD40) and moving them around, but my throttle doesn't even move when I let it go. I have to force it back by hand.

I just did this to myself the other night, after installing new grips. Basically, I reinstalled the right-hand controls too far from the end of the handlebar, so the throttle tube was rubbing, which prevented it from returning.

If that's not it, I'd say something was wrong in your carbs requiring further investigation
 
I like Simon's approach. It was the first thing that occurred to me as well. And, I might add, one of the check-list items to go through before each ride.
 
Yeah it does snap back when i let go, going to try new o-rings on the inlet manifold rubbers.
 
Hi again, i have changed the o-rings and all the boots seem to be in good order, would bad tappet clearances affect the thottle not returning to idle speed? That is one thing i hav'nt checked yet.
 
Where are the pilot screws set? On my old 550 the idle would hang until the screw were open at least 3 full turns open.
 
I set mixture screws at 3 turns out. If i back off the idle speed lower than it should be like 900rpm the revs no longer hang, the throttle does spring back all the way though so whats happening hear?
