    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Clutch basket springs...

Ok, I done a bit of searching but couldn't find the answer I was looking for. I have an 81 GS1100E and just took the clutch out to figure out the rattle and found the common nut has been pushed loose, (didn't loosen by rotation, was loosened by the threads of the nut rolling over.) I figured I was this far I might as well inspect everything else. I pulled out the basket and checked the springs in the clutch basket, there are 6, 3 large and 3 smaller springs. Upon inspection the smaller diameter springs are tight and do not rotate, however the larger springs seem to have about .10" clearance and move back and forth, in the basket.

Should the larger springs have this much clearance or should they be as tight as the smaller 3 springs?

I would search more but have to run Ace and get some new fasteners for the clutch cover and maybe by the time I get back this can be answered.

if i would you i would search a bit more and not rush out to buy some new fasteners for the clutch cover until you have found oud exactly what the problem is with your clutch and how much time and money this is going to cost you.

get your priorities right mate, dont expect members here to help you out if you wont help yourself

I dont believe the cover fasteners have much to do with the basket springs. Plus, there are some serious GS clutch gurus around here that will be more than happy to answer any question regarding GS clutches. So.....ask away. There are no dumb questions....well, yes there are but this is not one of them. :)

Get an upgraded hub nut when you put it back together. The stock nut is inferior quality. Thats my $.02

APE sells the nut for around $30.00

I already bought a new nut knowing 99% sure thats what was wrong, which was the problem, I just wanted to look around and see about the clearances of the larger diameter springs in the back of the basket.

Im sure they are in spec, as they all have the same clearance and the smaller diameter springs are the same alos, but with zero clearance.

As far as running to Ace, I knew damn well I am going to replace the phillip head stock fasteners with a allen head fastener.

And now Im back home and plan to look for some specs and ideas about the springs.

I plan to buy an upgraded nut when I also buy new fibers and clutch springs, but first things first. The new oem nut I bought will work for the next few weeks till I decide on how Im going to build the clutch.. (welded, billet, ect...) So the clutch will be back off again for the upgrade.

No problem, Im back home now and can look more, I just thought I might as well use the drive time back and forth to the store to maybe get a hint.
 
Still doesn't go into what Im looking for, but I think I have all the information I need at the moment, the clutch is all back together so it really doesn't matter much anymore, it will get me around town and I'll be buying a new basket soon anyways.
 
Get a good clutch hub off Ebay or send the one you have off to either APE or Falicon. You can buy a HD backing plate from APE and do it yourself.
These clutches can blow up and cause havoc on your engine.

I will be getting a new basket soon, after I check the other two motors I have since they seem to have the same part number for the basket. The rivets in this one are tight and the springs were a bit loose, but not sloppy.

Seen as this is the first one I had out I don't have anything to compare it to.
 
Mine was like yours, the thicker springs were loose and it rattled. Checked it again about 800 miles later and 2 of the 3 thick springs were broken, snapped in half. I picked up a used APE on Ebay. Just ask the seller if all the springs are tight or not.
 
Did you check the link? There is details on how to remove the springs, add a shim washer to keep the spring from rattling, and then welding the basket back together. I did it on my 1000 and it works well. By all means support the economy by getting a new clutch basket but if you are on a budget, the spring shim trick works well.

This photo shows my clutch basket just before I had the rivets welded all the way around.

Yes I read the link, however I do not have the shop tools I used to. I'll pull my other two motors apart and check the condition of the baskets. That way I can at least fix one while using one. Or use one untill I can buy a new basket.

Im just trying to get it on the road to take care of the registration and title stuff.

It may turn into a strip only bike and then I'll know what way I will go with the clutch.
