  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

where do you guys get your stainless allen bolts for the case covers and carb covers/bowls? wanted to get some and i have an industrial "hardware store" near me and i wanted to know if there may be a favorite.
 
i plan to get one of their kits, but from z1. what exactly does it include, if you dont mind listing it.

All the engine cover screws including stator cover, sprocket cover, ignition cover, clutch cover, valve cover, 8V round cam cap screws, and a few extra's I never figured out where they go.:oops: Oh, and allen wrenches too.
 
As an aside to this thread, don't waste time trying to find the acorn nuts that fasten the shocks to the frame anywhere but Suzuki, cuz the thread pitch is special. But they sure are purdy when they're new!

also, starter motor cover?
thats what was in my set for 850

I believe you got it! The starter motor cover screws must be the ones still sitting on my workbench.:oops:

excellent thread! I was wondering about a good place to get these bolts.

My local hardware store charges an arm and a leg for that stuff.
 
The lazy method is stainless cycle (or I think Z1 has the same deal). I have the ones from stainless cycle and they are very high quality. Full engine set about $35, carbs about $25.

Cheapest per piece price if you want a lot of leftovers for your obsessively organized collection of stainless metric allen head stuff...(who, me?) everything comes in larger quantities, usually 50 or 100. Look for "socket head cap screws." McMaster-Carr has lots of other oddball stuff, too.
 
I'm going to put a negative note on this...I purchased a stainless kit for my 1100 and it looked great when I first put it on but after a short while the bolts took on a grayish tint. They were stainless steel but were of the lower quality 304 type. I advise you to get 316 stainless if you can. I ended up replacing all the 304 bolts, one-by-one, with 316 SS that I purchased locally at Fastenel. The one problem I had was the very long bolts that hold the drive sprocket cover on...you will be hard pressed to find them but you might get luckier than me. I will say that they are worth the effort and the allen wrenches are easy to pack in your tool kit.

One other thing...aluminum and stainless steel are dissimilar metals and it is a very good idea to use Never-Seez (yes, it is spelled correctly) on them before you screw them in to prevent seizing. Not that it will happen but it could, especially if you ride in area where salt is very common (roads, or near the ocean).

Z1 kits are from Burk's, not Stainless Cycle.

Yeah, I meant roughly the same price neighborhood and all labeled for you to make it easy, not the same manufacturer. I know there are cheaper ways for sure. It was worth it to me to pay the extra couple of bucks to get a bunch of individual baggies with all the right bolts, separated and labeled.
 
Nice Thread! I've been thinking about this since I started the restoration last summer and since I'm going to be removing the side cases and polishing them, I'm in the market. I don't have a problem sourcing and buying individual bolts, but was thinking I might do better buying a kit since they probably buy in large quantities. So I'll be evaluating all the kits I can find as well as pricing out individul pieces myself. I'll try and post all my findings here to try and give something back to this great community.

Just learned something new! (you CAN teach an old dog new tricks) I did not know about 304 versus 316... One guy (Stainless Cycle I think) said as far as he knew I would not find a kit made up of 316 and if I did the cost would be about double. He also felt there should not be any issue with 304, but Hap Call reported a problem with his 304, so.... ymmv, and caveat emptor!

So a little research this afternoon and I have found several sources so far.

appears to be the same set. Not sure where they are coming from, but Rob @ Z1 told me his "come from Canada".

No comment on Z1 about polishing.

I have the set from stainless cycle. Washers are included where applicable, and they arrive polished. They haven't been in long enough for me to comment on the corrosion of the 304 stainless. I did have to slightly grind the bottom of 2 bolts for the valve cover, they were maybe 1 mm too long.
 
OK well I just got my kit from Z1 and I must say I am a bit disappointed. They sent me a friggen bag full of screws. Nothing is separated, no diagrams nothing. What if I didnt know which goes where???

Easy, match up the bolt length to your old ones. Or, loosely install all the bolts in the holes and make sure they are all sticking out the same amount before tightening them.
