Engine Paint - PJ1, VHT, or POR 15?

    What's the best?

I'm shocked to know I can actually get all three here in Australia (except VHT of course which is an Australian company AFAIK), but which one is best for my 450 motor?

Cost will be a factor of course, but what is the better option in terms of fuel resistance, temperature, stone chipping, etc.?

I've seen lots of engine painting threads, but can't seem to find one that compares them...

      Cheers Dan, there's one reply

I did notice on the spec's that PJ1 appeared to have a higher temperature threshold than VHT. I think it was something like 500 celcius vs 287 celcius which I found interesting.

500 centigrade is an amazing limit
I dont imagine anything but headers could get so hat as that..

Does POR -15 make High tempt coatings?

I thought they were all anti-rust

+1 for PJ1 case paint ive found nothing else that lasts as long or looks as good

The exhaust paint is of a similar quality reguarding durability but does not look quite so good imo so make sure its the case paint you get rather than the exhaust paint

Did you know that PJ1 do a silver & a grey that is made specifically as a suzuki engine paint & is a good match to the original used on some models ?

Harley Davidson brand if you are looking for black. They have a flat crinkle black that is amazingly durable. I've left it flat black or sometimes finish it a light coat of clear engine paint to give it a glossier look

I wish I knew who's paint it actually was

                        A new contender: Septone

I paid a visit to Supercheap yesterday as they're supposed to carry both PJ1 and VHT paint, but I couldn't see any at all.

However, they do have an alternative brand Septone. Anyone used this one? The have lots of stuff that could be good... engine, exhaust, brake caliper, you name it.

Engine paint is $16 for a 400g can and I think the brake caliper paint was $18 for 400g.

I didn't bother asking anyone about PJ1 or VHT as I was in a bit of a hurry, but I will have to go back and do that to compare.

Oh forgot another question! Any ideas how many cans I'd need to spray a 450 motor? How can I work this out?

I used about 1.5 cans of PJ1 on my skunk. I sprayed all case covers, starter cover, levers, brake & gear pedals, fork legs, rear shocks & some miscellaneous hardware.

I would think 2 cans will see you right. PJ1 is about $15 a can at Z1 Enterprises.

A can will do it if you use PJ1, preperation is the key
