Ok, so I have a 78 750. I took it out for a ride today and noticted that 2nd grear don;t show on the indicator all other grears and neutral work fine. I don't know how the indicator works so im not sure how to go about narowing donwn the cause. Any help is appreciated.

Also since I have you here. My gage back light is not coming on with the head light. i followed the wire clouser out and under the tank. Removed tank and wiggled all the connections...no dice. Haven't taking apart the dash yet but I can;t see both bubls going at once...that is if there is two. hmm. ok thankyou for the time.

Are you sure it's not the bulb for 2nd? My bike needed three when I bought it. About $3 a piece.

If if did work before it's just the bulbs or bad connection on them.Order new ones and replace them.

try unplugging and wiggling the conector at the cluster, you may have to unbolt 1 head light bolt and swing it to the side to gain access. I found a bad connection on my 77 on thursday. I also found 4 bulbs out in my clusters and my nuetral light still isnt working. my gear indicator light was out too, I found that the shaft sensor had just carboned up over time. pull off your chain cover and the sensor is directly below the sprocket. when you remove the two screws be prepared to catch the little ball that will fall out. gently sand the the contacts & the ball bearing then apply a tiny amount of grease on the spring & ball to hold it in place before you reinstall the sensor, also check to see if the spring is in good shape and sticks out a bit past the shaft so it is applying pressure to the ball & making contact to the sensor.
hope this helps and good luck with that old dinosaur.

I don't think the "78" GS 750 has actual bulbs in the gear position indicator. It's kind of electronic looking, not bulbs, not LED, it's really more like tiny neon lights that make the #

Yeah i figure i have to take apart the cluster and check the bulbs. As for the Grear light I'll have to look into the sensor. Its wierd how it lights up fine on all the other grears and just goes out like its off the on again for 3rd. i'll let you know how it goes

Bulb for "2" would be my guess. Had to replace a couple of them on my 450 but it's an easy enough job.

You do have bulbs for the gear indicator. You should be able to have the instrument panel off in ten minutes.

I'm not quite sure what you are asking in the second part of your question.

The '78 GS750 has an LED readout, no bulbs. I was having trouble with mine, getting readings such as "9" and "7." It was the readout unit that was hooped. Just went to the wreckers and bought a used one. :)

You need to drain the oil before removing the gear position sensor. Some of it, at least.

did you get it at vic motorcycle salvage? If so, what kind of price did he charge? I'm having the same issue with being in 9th half the time. does your neutral light work?

This sounds very simular to the issue I have with my 80 750...cept I have no idicator for gear for and gear two works off and on. I suspect connections are dirty for 2nd... 4th never worked since I got bike a year ago...guess I will be checking out my cluster tonight.
