    GS Valve Shim Club

The club is an exchange system, send in a shim get one back. Only ask for a small donation (which helps cover the costs of mailing materials and abrasives and equipment maintenance) to join, members pay for all postage and are responsible for shims they ship. We can sell a few shims to members that want a few spares on hand. Please send any questions to me in a pm.

Many of the shims that we received have been polished down to more usable sizes and come out with a near mirror finish. I think everyone who is a part of it has been happy with the results.

If you have already contributed to the shim pool, either in shims or cash donation, you are a lifetime member. (probably my lifetime)

If you have received shims from the pool and have not yet returned them, please do so, other members may need what you have removed and are obligated to return.

Please remember that shims that are not received by the shim club, are your responsibility and you are expected to replace them.

We also have a bunch of shim buckets that are free for members, just pay the postage.

We have a K&L shim storage box available, box by itself or with shims you want. Let me know what you need and we'll get it set up for you.

If you need to send shims to the club pool, the address is:

Hello there, I am a first time shim guy, and don't understand anything, maybe you can help. I ask for your patience. I turned the motor on my '83 1100 gs gl 8 valve over several times on two valves without the shim before I figured out it was a bad thing. I do not know if I have done damage, but to have some extra buckets sounds like a good thing. All the valves have about .001 to "pressure". I say this because my thinnest gage (.002) would not fit under any of them, although most turned easily, some did not. The two shims I looked at were 2.70, and 2.75, both starting with that assumed .001 deal. I put the 2.70 where the 2.75 was, and came up with .004, which seemed to make sence. The bike has 16 K on it, and from the rust on the bolts, and the hard gasket, and clean bolt heads I asume this is the first shim adjustment, but I do not know. I guess I need from 2.55 to 2.70 but again, have no clue. I am further frustrated by the bad manuals, and half done help guides that I have enlisted. I think I located the correst Suzuki shop manual, ordered it, and am earer to get it. The turning of the cam without the shims was something I did out of ignorance because I was not warned by the stuff I looked at. Again, frustrating. I do not understand how to become a member without sending you shims, and I don't understand how to order the shims you list. I would send back my original shims. I try to be honest, and forthright. I am new to computers, and don't care for them much. I am an old blue collar cave man type, but not macho, my communication skills... hell, I have not typed in 40 years, make me appear more dense than I already am. I hope I am not asking too much, but I am looking for your help in this matter, to get off the ground. I sent you a message some days ago commending you on your efforts. My email is suzydanb@comcast.net yours, Dan Bailey

      Additional note

Hi Folks, Please remember to send me a pm if you are sending shims to the pool. It helps me to know whose shims are being received and what you may need. Thanks, Ray

          How does this work

I was wondering how the shim club works can we get shims from here to do a reshim then send whats left back plus the old shims we remove. I'm just trying to find out because I have to do a shim job on my 1981 gs 550 L and wanted to know. Thanks

Do your measurements and double check it all. Record what you need for each cylinder..for example..INTAKE1 needs a 2.72..and so on.

Send Ray a PM and discuss from there is what I did.

He sent me what I needed and I sent him back the non useable ones and some other extras I had doubles and triples of.
            MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
            1978 GS 1000 E, 1979 GS 1000 S, 1973 Yamaha TX 750, 1977 Kawasaki KZ 650B1, 1975 Honda GL1000 Goldwing, 1983 CB 650SC Nighthawk, 1972 Honda CB 350K4, 74 Honda CB550

NEVER SNEAK UP ON A SLEEPING DOG..NOT EVEN YOUR OWN.

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

Just wondering which side of the shim you are polishing down to achieve a different thickness.

Generally, they get the rougher side polished. If there is no difference in finish then I polish the side that has thickness marked, though many have no markings. From a functional standpoint both sides are identical.
