I got a rusty 850 while ago. May not be worth fixing. I tried checking vin engraved into the frame. The response was no record found. It is gs850 102519

That's not a VIN it a serial number.

The foil looking sticker on the frame neck is completely unreadable. I was wondering if the number engraved could help find out the vin. I read it was the 79 850 that had kick start. I can turn the motor over by hand pushing the kickstart.theres no front master cylinder, the rear brake seems locked up the brake pedal will not depress. The throttle sleeve wont turn. The cables have surface rust. I dont know if dissassembling things and soaking the parts is the solution.

Yes, 1979 was last model year to have kickstart (and last year of the VM carbs, and last year of nonhalogen lights, and last year before a handfull of other design changes for the 1980 models).

Yah, 1979 was before Suzuki used the VIN standard.

I think I recall that the serial number would have the year code letter after the model name.
ANd I think the model name would be GS850G (even though 1979 didnt have the G on side panels).
ANd year code for 1979 is N (78 is C).

So does it have GS850GN102519 of a number.....?

GS850GN - The engine number will be similar (6 digit 102***) but not the same. Re Nessism: What's the question?

The number you reference IS the VIN. The modern 17 digit VIN became a thing in January 1981 (according to google.) If a VIN look up shows no record found, most likely, the vehicle hasn't been registered for a LONG time, and the record has been deleted from the system. I believe these records are kept by the state where the vehicle was previously registered. I don't know if there is a national database, although I suspect, the different states share information in some way.
