Couple of questions Need some help

Hello guys and gals,
Long time no speak. Hope all is well with everyone. I have a couple of questions and I`m not sure sure where to put them so please give me some assistance.
1. I recently replaced the gauges on my bike as the ones on it were not correct (Thank you from the site). So I don`t know the the correct mileage but I do know the ones that were on it were 44,000+ and the the new ones are 88,000+ and the speedo whines. At first I thought it was the tach. Disconnected the tach cable problem still there. Disconnect the speedo cable it goes awgay. Is there a fix? Lube the gauges? Replace the speedo with the one from my old gauges?

2. The wires from the fuel sending unit do not match the color codes for the fuel gauge wires from the gas gauge. I have the the wiring diagram from Bike Cliff`s site but no help.

In my experience, once a speedo or tach starts squealing, it's already toast. You can try to lube the bearing just inside the connection point but that may or may not buy you a few dozen miles before it starts squealing again. And unfortunately they did not design them in such a way that you can change out just the bearing: the whole mechanism needs to be junked and replaced. Worse yet, they're not making any more of these. So we're all basically at the mercy of the second-hand units on eBay that may or may not already be squealing themselves. I literally just dealt with this on my 850G. Luckily I had a working tach mechanism in my hoard.

On my 1981 750E that I had a few years back, I did some fancy modifications to fit an electronic tach from a 1983 1100E into the housing but it never worked exactly right at higher RPMs.

I keep dreaming that one day I will bodge an RPM sensor and a servo together and 3D print the result, but so far I don't even have the 3D printer yet.

Thank you Charles I was afraid that might be the case. I cleaned them up, painted them and bought the chrome backplate so I`m kinda` bummed. I`m going to try to replace them with the speedo from the old gauges and hope they fit. Fingers crossed. Otherwise I`ll just have to spend some more money and hope for the best. By the way that`s a good looking bike you`ve got there!

Could be the speedo cable is whining and not the gauge.
It only takes a strand of wire kinked or broken.
How does the speedo needle behave?
What colours have you got on the fuel sensor wiring.
In general there will be a black/white ground wire and a yellow/black supply at the level sensor.
It's only a variable resistor.
At the gauge there will be a third, an orange supply from the main bus.
Looking at the later 82-83 wiring to the tacho, the orange supply is change to a more purple/orange type colour.

I’d try new cables first too.. also check out the condition at the drive end

I thought that as well but it didn`t do it with the old speedo also it stops when I disconnect the cable. Thanks ahead.

The input spindle to the speedo then is the next thing to check. Light lubrication, sewing machine oil might help.

Thanks Brendan. I think the wife may have some laying around. Hopefully I`ll get a chance to work on it it in the next couple of days. Even with covid life still goes on. I thought when you retired life was supposed to be easier. HA!

I would so love to have an after work day. Lol Errands all day today. Grand kids tomorrow. VA and doctors Friday. Hopefully Saturday I`ll get some garage time. Oh crap! Forgot Saturday is opening day for the Cubbies. Good thing it`s a 12:00 game. And They`re playing the Brewers. Hard to live in Wisconsin and be a Cubs fan. Glad the bike is loved up here. Mike

So I had a few minutes on Saturday. Wifey was out of sewing machine oil so I went old school. Used some 3 n 1, Only got to ride about 5 miles but so far so good. I did manage to take the speedo out of the old gauges so we`ll see what happens, More to follow........Mike
