1980 GS550E hot start
Hi, I started a new thread. I?m having running issues, I?ve cleaned carbs, new intake boots, checked ohms in coils, charged battery, petcock works, valves in spec. What?s happening is poor idle and once it starts and runs for a while if it stalls the bike will not start back up, it will with starting fluid or I have to wait a while before it does. Also float height is correct. Could it be bad coils? Even though my voltmeter shows proper ohms reading? ThanksTags: None -
Coils are fairly stout-reliable. If suspect ignition problems, two things to check first:
- voltage at coils, the org/wht circuit (from there to ground).
- spark plug caps. They can be removed from wire by twisting-pulling. Check with ohm meter. Stock type should be 5k ohm, but fail over time/heat and go
much higher or open.

Ok, here are my findings.
both coils on primary: 004
both coils on secondary: 15.17
seems like the right ohms.
what I did find is? I tested with the caps off because I could not get a reading with the caps on. So my thinking is caps are bad. It?s strange why it would start though.Comment
