Proud new owner of a cafe racer in progress

Just picked up a 1992 GS850G that was on it’s way to becoming a cafe racer. So, wiring is in shambles, no stock air box. I believe it’s got vm carbs. Sub frame has already been chopped. I’m going to continue down this road but need help with choosing pods. I’ve already gathered from lurking here that I should get the DynoJet kit immediately. Anyone want to give me pod guidance? Anything else I should know in advance as I work on the build? TIA

    Welcome, sweathog!

Posting a pic or two (of the bike) would help clear up couple of things right off the bat.

          Welcome to the site.
Lots of work ahead but the vast knowledge here should be able to assist if you get stuck.

I bought APE pods and was very happy with the quality.

Foil sticker on the headstock will have the correct year and model. 1992, I don’t think so. Don’t see any pics with carbs so can’t tell you if CV or VM. BikeCliffs Website will have a lot of info you need, most importantly a factory service manual and a good wiring diagram. Top 10 Newbie Mistakes Thread is a good place to start reading. See links in my signature.

Cool! That helps. If it had VM carbs it'd have a kick start and a few other things different. Like Rich said it couldn't be a '92 as they stopped making the 850 long before that. The tank and frame are an '82 or '83 so hopefully they gave you CV carbs in one of those buckets

Ditto on the APE pods. I've been very happy with them for years. Half the price, all the looks/performance of K&N.

2016 XL883L sigpic Two-tone blue and white. Almost 42 hp! Status: destroyed, now owned by the insurance company. The hole in my memory starts an hour before the accident and ends 24 hours after.

I didn’t realize a sausage finger typo could cause such ire. In my signature, the year is correct. It’s an 82. I’ll post a picture of the carbs later this morning. Thanks for the info about the APE pods. As soon as I figure out which carbs I’ve got, I’ll order a set.

There’s no ire. It is possible to edit your original post if you wanted to. A pic would prove it but GSes ‘80 and after came with CV carbs.

Ire? Hardly. Just eager to help....maybe too much so.

                      Good luch with your project.

CV carbs. The chart on this page linked below found on BikeCliffs Website gives more specifics by year/model as to what size Mikuni BS CV carbs they should be as well as the jet sizes they had from the factory.
