Don't know in Finland, but over here the bikes come with an ID plate that shows the date of mfg. Normally if mfg. in August or later, will probably be the next yr. model... and yes very nice looking bike that looks most all original.

I think my wording was misleading.

Shouldn't the front fender on a GS1100G be painted instead of chromed as on mine?

You can have a look at the link below, but I think I see chrome fenders on similar bikes. Also check GSResources' homepage. There's a gallery of users' bikes

Possibly Euro market only. Certainly applied to the GS850 for some years.

            Welcome to TheGSR.
Nice pics in the Random Pic thread.

About the 1000G verses 1100G,I too would have said 1100G based on that two tone paint scheme which makes me think after 1982, so an 1100G not 1000G.... but that is all based in my USA experience here.

            Non USA, had some differences.
One difference i can see there is the chrome front fender

Somewhere on engine, front lower of the cylinder head I think, should be the displacement. An "1100G' will have 1074 cc.

Had 850G for 14 years. Now have GK since 2005.

This is the only tag I can find so far:

I was wondering if there is a good site (VIN "decoder") which would tell things about a particular bike of this age?

Well, got valves adjusted and everything buttoned up and GS running.

It seems that five year storage by previous owner has done it's damage and carbs need cleaning. Groups appears to be missing on idle so I contacted a guy who did my -83 Katana's carbs a decade ago. He is a bit busy so it'll take a couple of weeks to get them done.

Otherwise engine sounds OK and starts easy. Which is nice.

Got the bike today back from the guy who took the carbs apart and did thorough and comprehensive cleaning of them.

After new intake manifolds and sealings etc. + synchronizing the GS now purrs like new.

While picking the bike from him I left my EFE to him for same job.
