    Later Note:
    I looked, okay, CHicago Area.
    275 miles
    4 1/2 hours on highway.
Thanks for the response Redman. I appreciate the answer about the headlight switch not being affected by the Stator being directly connected to the R/R. No worries there.

As for the GSR Rally, I will see if I can get the GS850 ready throughout May. Looks like it's happening late in June so I have a bit of time but still. Priority are tires, installing new R/R unit and wiring Stator to it, and braided steel brake lines. If I can get all of those done, I may be able to come down and join the ride!

Welcome to the forum, I have owned a 79 for 25 years…not currently running but working on a full top end rebuild. I use Pledge to clean my bike when on the road, removes bugs and road grime with ease smells good shines and protects. No more advice for you, you have got it going on.

Thanks gustovh. Pledge sounds like a great idea. I'll give it a go this season.

I'll never forget being at your place Vince for a GS rally...it was my first rally and I had so much fun.
I use pledge as well....I like to tell the story about being on your rally and we stopped at a gas station...after everyone was done filling up...out came the cans of pledge....I had never seen pledge used on a bike before.....been using it ever since....stuff works great! and on your helmet shield it wicks away rain too. I've since convinced all my riding buddies here to use it too.

I've used pledge on my boat for yrs, but not on bikes... Got to ask are there parts where you should try to not get Pledge on or just use it all over everything?

I only use it on my helmet and bike windscreen....but I don't think it could hurt anything....

I agree about Pledge on the visor or windscreen, it works well.

Don't make the mistake of using Pledge on your saddle - I'm convinced it degrades the vinyl. It doesn't happen overnight, but it falls apart a within a couple of years.
I know that anecdote is not evidence, but I had the situation where one saddle was occasionally cleaned with Pledge and another one was in storage and never cleaned.
When the first one fell apart, I laid off using Pledge on the second, it never had any and it's still perfectly sound.
Both covers were about the same age, give or take a year.
