He's back, and with another 1100G

Some of you old timers might remember my original GS1100G buying story: https://www.thegsresources.com/_foru...325-82-gs1100g

Ended up selling that bike to a friend that I race with about 6 years ago, but about a year later I had regrets about it. He's just had it sitting since.

Was doom scrolling motorcycles CL earlier this year and a guy had an 82 GS1100G for $600 about 2 hours away. Pinged him with some questions and got some answers that weren't bad. Complete, not running, needs tires, but some mods, rattle can paint, no dings, header with Kerker, etc.

We all have the bike illness here, so I told myself (ie: I squirreled/rationalized that I still have 6' of open space in the 3 car garage that wasn't currently occupied by a bike...) "eff it" the next morning and loaded the ramp into the truck and grabbed the cash and hit the road

The "new" GS is in the garage. It's 'bay area' rusty from being stored outside on the Delta but, it's all there. Tore it apart with the ultimate goal to get to the carbs with some side work along the way. New tires, battery, brake pads are going in now, carb kit at the ready. Don't like the front brake pistons, they don't move much at all... Electrical is kinda hacked up, the original R/R still bolted to the bottom of the battery box but the wires are all cut, and another R/R is wired in sitting on top of the rear fender. Huh... ok. Cleaned the wiring for that one up. It's just dirty dirty overall.

Guy in town charged me $80 freaking $$ to change the front tire out with the new Shinko 100/90-19, I'd thought he quoted me $18 when I dropped it off and thought "that's a nice price... sure". I got the bad news when I went in to pick it up. Decided to change the rear myself with my new MotionPro tire irons and rim shields which is happening this morning. Got a center stand with hardware off of Ebay to get the rear off the ground that went on yesterday. Goal for today is putting it back together and checking compression after checking for spark all around. Replacement coils are on it, and the wire lengths were about 36" so those got cut down. Need to make sure they are good - question everything, right?

Unless it's been replaced previously, the spline for the drive shaft bolted to the rear wheel will be wasted. You will need a new spline and the special high moly grease (50%+ moly). Tons more info in the archives about this.

doesn't look bad, but it's getting replaced anyway. Recall threads in here about that spline

That was 5hrs I'll never get back. Recall the guy at the repair shop saying the front tire was full of fix-a-flat, and that it took him a few to get the bead cleaned up.

Imagine my surprise.... What a mess the back wheel was, fix-a-flat goo everywhere. Some in hardened lumps, some shellacked on the bead, gooey mess in the center, fluid floating around in the tire... Scraped it all out as best I could, wiped it down, and then used a red scotchbrite pad to clean the crap off the bead.

Got it all cleaned up, but took forever. Got 1 side of the rear tire on, and about half of the other side, but it's tough sledding to get the rest of the tire over the rim. Ejected out to fight the good fight against it again tomorrow. Hands are pretty sore already.

Did I mention that the bike is full of black widow spiders from sitting outside on the Delta? Have cobwebs everywhere that I'm constantly pulling off, a few squashed bodies here and there are starting to pile up.
