82 gs 850 gl project

I recently picked up an 82 gs 850 gl with 33k on the clock all stock for 500$. The engine was supposedly rebuilt according to the prior owners I talked to. I know for a fact this bike has been sitting for the better part of 15 years because someone destroyed carburetor (2) snapped a drill bit off in the needle valve

So far I have new plugs rebuilt the other 3 carbs got it running and it idled on 3 cylinders sounded great rebuilt both brake calipers and flushed the lines the clutch and throttle both move freely

as for what I need to do next it needs tires and forks rebuilt for sure the bike is really hard to push I assume its just because its been sitting forever I dont know these bikes and if you have any pointers on what needs to be repaired next I would appreciate it

I want to say welcome to the forums and you're definitely on the right track doing the maintenance. In addition to the calipers, the master cylinder needs a rebuild.

I will definitly get moving on that Im assuming both need rebuilt
as for pics it may be a bit as its not at my house atm having enormous difficulty pushing it into the bed of a truck or anywhere more than 3ft out of the corner its currently in.

If it has been sitting in high humidity for a prolonged time you may have to remove the wheels and you may find that the bearings or spindles are seized up. If you can't turn the wheel freely when it is in neutral then I would remove the wheel and inspect the bearings and spindles. Clean them up and re- grease them. Post a pic of the snapped drill in the needle valve. I might have a replacement that I can send you if you can't find one locally. Or you can try Z1 Enterprises.

Good advice here - for the grease, you'll want a high moly content variety like the Honda 08734-001 on Amazon.

Well been working on the bike axles and bearings are free horrible tires got the parts for the forks to be rebuild as well as the brake master cylinders


as I was tearing it apart I came across a crispy ground off what looks like the starter solenoid I assume I can bypass that wire and provide a new ground somewhere else on the harness since that ground wire T's off in 3 seperate locations before grounding onto the headlight for some reason

also made the terrible mistake of unsnaking the wires in the head light assembly





O ya I dont have a good pic but the covers and tank are painted black should great once I get around to buffing it


pay no mind to the mess behind the bike its a culmination of 3 people moving

this project is dead truck just got totaled and I drive 500 miles a week to work and back dang semis not stopping at a red light

was close to done to

new carb boots just rebuilt carbs by a forum member freshly rebuilt forks fresh oil and filter was about to change the differential fluid starts and runs great

gas tank+ side covers just freshly painted black slight dent on gas tank after i "bumped into it"

still have parts to rebuild master cylinders

needs tires and brake calipers rebuilt (pistons replaced) and brake lines before I feel it would be road ready

need it gone gonna be getting put on Craigslist

Ill repost a better picture when I put it back together into a bike shape

Sorry to hear that. Although it's more work - depending on your available time and skill level, you may have better luck parting it out.

excuse the garage it was cleaned about 2 days after this pic

well plans changed recently ended up with a bit more consistent cash flow so the project is back going again and since its so close its going on the road

had it going today got new shinko in the mail 120$ shipped for the set and the last of the parts I need for the brakes everything from the pistons inwards for another 200$

had it running right finally today runs amazing when you got a functional petcock and correctly ported vacuum lines

changed the drive oils and both were rotting nasty goo instead of oil fushed it with some gas and filled it up gonna run it a couple hundred miles and change it again

beat it up and down the dirt road out front and it runs really good just a couple little fine tunings and it will be back on the road. I havnt had a motercycle in 2 months

and I dont know why I went so long without one. This bike is very fun to drive wonder what the difference between it and an E is Im guessing its quicker without all the

powerloss from the shaft

almost got this hunk of junk road ready new tires brakes calipers rebuilt new pistons and both masters rebuilt petcock rebuilt carbs fresh fluids for everything rebuilt forks every single oil was rotten except the motor oil

all thats left is to bleed the brakes more and more and more and more and more. Finish sealing the air box and do a valve adjustment and hopefully it will stop needing fist fulls of money thrown at it and I can ride it already

Well I got a parts bike for this bike now for 250 from a guy who redid the top end and then started bobbing it turns out its a 1980 gs850g

going to do a bit of work to this motor before I fire it up but it will be replacing my low compression engine currently installed in my 82
