G,day all from Australia.
Recently bought a GS400 1977 for $500au. Runs really good, not registered, missing a few bits. Now what to do????

So far have ordered a headlight, repair kit for fuel petcock(leaking), front disc pads, front fork seals (although don't have the special tool) and need a new master cylinder (will try the wreckers for that). The rear shocks are an odd pair, I think one is the original. Any suggestions would be great, I have a bit of money to put in but first thing is to get her registered.

Hey mate, welcome from the east coast! Always good to have other Aussies on here

The twins are fun little bikes, that's for sure!

First thing I'd be doing is the basics on making sure the engine is good. Check valve clearances, then once that's done and they're good, check compression, make sure the points are clean and adjusted right, carbs are properly clean and balanced, etc.

Then time to have fun and make her your own

I did Ikon fork springs and shocks on my 82 450 and they're a great upgrade, cost me $630 shipped to my door about 5 years ago now, so I suspect the prices may have changed a bit. They're progressive rate springs and the shocks have preload and damping adjustment.

Should make a great cafe racer, if you're serious about the racer part a GS500 cylinder and pistons is a bolt on 25% displacement increase.

Thanks mate. There pretty rare over here but I'm always on the look out. What do you think of the big bore kits?

Not as big as the 500 and a whole lot more expensive. You guys don't have the GS 500 twins from the late eighties and nineties? They made them from 1989 to about....now?

yeah bro they do exist but rare as hens teeth on the west coast for the same vintage as mine 1977. So these later models bolt straight in?

Yes, the GS500 that started in 1989. I'm not sure which years are the best but the ones from the nineties for sure, probably later.

I think on your 400 you may be able to use the 500's head, too.
