I would have loved to ride it home. The seller assured me it was perfect. Fresh tune up, new battery, cleaned carbs, runs great he said. That's why I got it for so cheap. We started it up and it doesn't run with the choke off. Riding it was out of the question as the engine bogs and stalls with throttle. I'm pretty sure it's a carb issue. Chef is just finishing a set for my 81 GS850 so it looks like this gets the rebuilt ones. My other project will wait a little longer.

A little more since I've had trouble with long posts, shorter is better.

P.O. is 76 years old. This bike sat in the back of the garage. He is a mechanic and bought it in '86 with 5k miles on it. He said it didn't fit in when he rode with his Harley buddies!

Wonder how many he passed as they broke down.

That sounded really cold as I thought about it. Of course he wouldn't have passed by his buddies, but pick them up if possible!

Chef is just finishing a set for my 81 GS850 so it looks like this gets the rebuilt ones.

Keep in mind that the "choke" mechanism is different between the '81 and '83 carbs.

It's possible to convert the '81 carbs to the '83 "choke", if you want. All you will have to do is swap the brackets that hold the cables and the rod that pulls on all the "choke" plungers.

I did this the other way around, when I converted my '80 to use the '82/'83 style "choke" lever on the left handgrip, instead of the knob in the center of the steering stem.

I really like that color scheme. I don't think all that many burgundy/black ones were sold. One normally sees the '83s in the blue scheme.

That is a fine looking bike, obviously well cared for. Sounds like some carb love is (hopefully) all it will need.

You got a good one there, if my wife was buying me presents like that I'd be keeping her to.
We got it in righting chaps "no hacksaw's" and I'm with Mr Steve.
Id love to have ridden it home.
