    New 850 owner in Nebraska

Hi everybody! I'm the owner of a 1980 GS850G that I acquired from a coworker as my first bike. Got a really good deal on it and have wanted to try riding. After lots of reading and research on this forum I tuned the bike up and went over everything both to check and learn as much as I could. The bikes always starts fast and runs great (With the usual GS engine noise). I have no other motorcycle experience except for this bike but as far as I can tell its been a very nice bike. I recently took it on a trip to Colorado from Omaha for a grand total of 1400 miles. It was very comfortable and had no problems except some oil usage. It kept up with a Yamaha mean streak and a Suzuki hayabusa. We went up Pikes Peak and it ran great for being tuned for 1000ft ASL. So far it has been a very reliable, solid, and easy to work on bike and I'm looking forward to many miles to come!

Welcome. I see you wasted no time in piling on some miles.
Awesome on the ride up Pikes Peak.

When consulting the magic 8 ball for advice, one must first ask it "will your answers be accurate?"

Yes good-on-you! And you've been doing your research here too ! My 650 seems to use a little oil up too on a longer trip too... I'm glad to see you are checking it. That augurs well for the bike, having an attentive owner.
Need say, Keep an eye on charging issues -a little voltmeter attached will tell you if it's getting abnormal... and elecctolyte-level of the battery too.

      And a picture please!
