    My GS story.

    Hi Folks.

I have not posted here for a while, and I would just like to tell the story about my 78 GS750E rebuild and experience, I am in England.

I rebuilt this bike in 05/06, with the help and advice of the members of this forum. This was a complete every last nut and bolt rebuild, from the bottom up. I retired recently after 50 years in the engine reconditioning industry, so at the time of the rebuild I had access to all the facilities I needed. I found this forum invaluable for specific GS advice and sourcing parts, and I thank the good folks here.

The engine was completely rebuilt, and I bored it out to 850 using std GS850 pistons. I also did a multiangle valve seat job and a 20 thou (.5mm) head skim. The cam sprockets slotted to keep the std timing. The carbs were rebuilt with repair kits sourced here, and I fitted a Jama original exhaust system. I have always used Valvoline durablend 10/40 semi synth oil, and after 1500 miles it comes out looking and feeling like new.

I did the usual R/R replacement with the Electrex unit, and fitted the Dyna S ignition and coils. The bike had Hagon progressive fork springs and rear units, and a fork brace was fitted. I also did the 530 rear chain conversion, and fitted a GS1000 rear wheel for the wider tire options. I have used Avon Roadriders since the rebuild and been very happy with them.

12 years and 26 thousand miles on, I have had no real problems with the bike (touch wood!) Had a couple of frayed clutch cables due to a fault in the lever alignment, but that was sorted. Then the gear display decided to tell me I was in sixth gear all the time when I only have five! Could not find a replacement, so I spliced in a unit found on the net, that fixed that annoying issue.

I love this bike it is a joy to ride, it pulls well and will accelerate up to an indicated 130 MPH if I am feeling brave!. It handles great and does around 45 to the gallon. People often take a look and tell me they had a GS back in the day and how good they were. Keep up the good work, regards Footy.

When consulting the magic 8 ball for advice, one must first ask it "will your answers be accurate?"

                THanks.

Sounds like the engine should be as good as the bike looks.

Had 850G for 14 years. Now have GK since 2005.
