"After 15 years, my 1st year Katana restoration project is finally finished."

Too much detail - we really don't need to know about every last nut & bolt. 1982 "Custom" tells us everything...

2016 XL883L sigpic Two-tone blue and white. Almost 42 hp! Status: destroyed, now owned by the insurance company. The hole in my memory starts an hour before the accident and ends 24 hours after.

Hey gang, not really sure where "Custom" came from, the admin must have taken liberties. Nothing custom about the resto, (unless you want to nit pik the LED headlight bulb and 530 chain) it's a 82 GS1000SZ in full OEM trim with full OEM features. I lucked out when I bought it years ago, was a one owner bike that the owner left mostly unmolested and what he did change, he kept the take offs and passed them on to me.

I just had to clean her up and and was lucky she wasn't to roached. Plus I hoarded parts for the rebuild while they were still available from Suzy.

Hope you didn't return the suspension to it's '82 specs. Cycle World said that in 1982 the suspension was "practically rigid at speeds less than 90 mph."

I am running a pair of Icon shocks (lok OEMish) in the back. I still have the OEM shocks but they no longer provide any level of rebound damping and it would be quite the undertaking to disassemble the non-serviceable shocks to rebuild them. I played with some 850 shocks to see how bad it would be and you end up almost destroying them to get them apart.

The front end is stock, stock springs, new bushings, new seals ect, i think i am running a 15wt oil, the bike rides nice not sure what CW was going on about in 82, but at the same time I don't currently have the OEM shocks installed.

              A few other efforts done:
The engine has been balanced, crank rebuilt, trued, polished and welded, fresh OEM piston rings, ape clutch plate and re cut valves/seats.

They also said the '83 1100 vibrated and weighed less than the '82 1000, and made a few more horses.

Yes that makes sense, the 83 had 100 extra cc's plus less body work which would be a weight reduction.

Both the 16v 1000 and the 16v 1100 run the same compression, and head, the 1000 may have a slightly different cam profile, and ignition curve, and a slightly different crank end and smaller stator for quicker reving.

The piston block is a 1100 block and suzy just used super thick sleeves to get piston size down to 1000 from 1100 instead of doing a new casting or full retool.

End of the day the differences are so minor it would be hardly noticeable to a layman.
