commute gets longer...

Now that the morning commute in NH has creeped into the balmy 55-65 degree range, I find my 35-40 mile bike ride (depending on which normal route travelled) to work has grown some. Finding more and more detours to venture off on, my commute has now stretched out to 50-60 miles.
Partly due to having fun with the "new" 850G in the warm temps, I allow more time to go to and from work, for the longer distance and lower speed limits. More than one occasion has put me on dirt and gravel roads, but the urgency to get to and from has been relaxed.
Pretty soon I'll be doing 100 miles just to get to work by way of the seacoast! Now let's see...at 41-45mpg I can cover 30% more miles on the same gas as my car, but may have to start leaving before sunrise and coming home after sunset.
Since 60-70% of my bike riding is commuting, this allows me more pleasure rather than just mindless autopilot travelling.

Amen brother. There is a little route that I take to get to work. Not much in the way of twisties right round here, but this has bout the best i can get. Something to be said for what a nice ride will do for your work mood...

when i ride mine into work i tend to find alternate routes home. However, not an additional 20 miles. I'm having fun while I can.

...and reflexes. All was not sweet bliss, as I was travelling the last loop around the city reservior this morning at a pretty good clip for winding secondary roads. Either I was glancing at the sun reflecting off the shimmering water or just a glance down at the gauges...lo and behold when I looked ahead, I realized the pickup truck ahead was locking his brakes up on a downhill twisty so as not to plow into the SUV making a sudden left hand turn. Grabbing front brake in a hurry along with a little too much back brake, the fun began. Rear wheel lockup, distance to rear end impact getting real short, bike starting to slide out to the right and no way to get around.
After about 20-30 ft of skid I was able to sense a slow enough speed to let go of the rear brake while steering into the skid, and shift my weight enough to keep the bike from snapping around and me high siding. Luckily, no impact, bike stalled, visions of my only bike accident that happened 36 years ago(that time I high sided and hit the deck pretty good) in the same situation all registering in my brain.
SUV makes quick turn, truck ahead accelerates, bike started right back up as I manage to still have some rolling speed and space to pop the clutch and continue on my way leaving a few witnesses scratching their heads and thinking what a lucky b*st*rd I was.
So, yah, it's still all good.....

I was doing 123 miles a day comute. It got to suck real bad. The first and last 17 miles of it was the only thing keeping my tires round. Now I ride for the pleasure of it. No more 9-5
