First time pulled over on the bike

Hi Kerry,

Being respectful and making sure the officer is put at ease goes a long way. Next time give the kids a break in the school zone.

The one time I was pulled over on my GS, the officer would hear nothing of "lane splitting" between the #1 and HOV lanes on the freeway. He wrote me up for a carpool violation anyway. He was about half my age, if that. I took the ticket to court and won via Trail By Declaration. I know you've heard the story but maybe some new members, especially in California, might want to know how to fight a ticket. Hence the link to my little story.

I hesitated to post this and Jinx myself. I have NEVER been pulled over on a bike but from what I read and hear, If you are decently geared up, licenced and insured, and respectful you stand a good chance of getting off with a warning.

I find this method works the best. I am very polite, I do only what I am told to do, I explain what I am about to do (I need to remove the seat to get to my registration, is that O.K.?) and I do not volunteer any information. I merely stand or sit there and allow them to control the situation.
They have a gun that could shoot me.
They have a car they can cram me into the back seat of.
They have handcuffs they could restrain me with.
They have a radio they can use to call for even more armed persons.

The way I look at it, they own me until they allow me to leave. So I do as I am told. My last moving violation was in June, 1970.
And some persons have insinuated that I sometimes race on the street. Not sure where they got that idea.

First words cop said was something about Special Enhanced Enforecment, not exactly sure what that ment.

Think I've been pulled over 3 times in 30 years.First one was dead to rights speeding.No problems with it,I was.Second was when I was taking my brand new 06 SV650 on it's very first ride .Went from Victoria to Sidney.About 25 to 30 km.New bike and the mirror weren't adjusted right.Didn't realise the cop was behind me till he pulled along side with lights going.Pull over cop got out of his car as I was taking my helmet off.You could see his face drop as he came towards me.No lecture not much of anything except asking how much much new leathers cost.Then we where on are separate ways.Third one was funny.Had a speed thing set up in Sooke.Went though 1 way.Nothing but did notice a motor cop.Go back,no one doing over the limit.Motor cop motions me over.WTF.Tells me he's jealous cause I'm riding and off I go.

In PA that could cost you a few hundred dollars, it was one of the first laws Gov. Ed signed.

The only time in 36 years of M/C riding that I pulled over was in a RIDE (reduce impaired driving everywhere) check. There are a lot of M/C cops on our roads and a lot seem to be into bikes, so all they wanted to do was to talk about my bike. They're usually pretty decent , I know a few of them through my excavating business ,so I just ask them how so and so is doing and that changes the whole conversation.

The way I see it is if you get pulled over and the cop was going to give you a little talking to and let you go, if you're an AH about it, he probably will just write a ticket instead. If you're pleasant and he writes a ticket, the cop probably isn't going to apologize and take it back because you're being an AH.

When he said "Do you promise to pay attention to the school zones and not speed?" a part of me wanted to say "What if I say 'no'?" but I didn't want to get a ticket. Part of me wanted to ask "How many people tell you 'no, I don't promise that'?" but I didn't want to push my luck.

I didn't mention it before, but yes, I was wearing my armored riding jacket (which is schoolbus colored) and a helmet emblazoned with reflective stickers.

I think most cops, especially those that ride, understand our situation. We have every right to ride our bikes. We pay just as much in taxes and registration fees as a guy driving a new Benzo. Yet most of the laws, roads, light switches, etc are set up for cars. Most of the people in those cars pay no attention period, let alone pay attention to us. So the rules and odds are already stacked against us.

A while back I was headed to work on the bike. Entered the freeway, and almost immediately had some screw ball cut me off. I changed lanes and sped up a little... She tried to pinch me off again so I jumped out into the fast lane and hammered it. As I looked, I saw a Statie with his radar pointed right at me standing under an overpass. I looked down, I was doing 110 mph. I'm smoked. I'm gonna lose my license. I started to slow down and watch for his lights. Never happened. He never came after me. I think maybe, and this may not be the case but I like to pretend it is, he saw what was happening, that I was trying to evade some idiot who was more or less trying to kill me, and not out stunting or whatever...and let me go.

Or maybe Essie was to stealthy to pick up on radar. Lol

I'we been pulled over a few times in the last 20 years,mostly on Angeles Crest.One time i tore up there in a pretty brisk clip,when i rode past a CHP in a Bronco(they using those in mountaneous areas here).I knew he will come after me since my headlight was turned off due to bad charging and you must have it on up there.So i had to wait for him to catch up with me with that sled,pulled over(could'we just keep riding,he would never caught me),and he told me my headlight is off.he said if i can fix it he would let me go,so i did.He let me go,never mentioned my speed.
Long before that i was with my GSXR,flew past the CHP,never saw him,so apparently he was chasing me for at least five miles when he finally radioed ahead and another CHP pulled in front of me.He asked me if i think this is a race track,but he never gave me a ticket for speeding either only for passing at the yellow line. Nice guys.

The first and only time I got pulled over on my motorcycle the cop was on foot . Road was closed and they gave me and my neighbor a $175 ticket for riding in a residential area where they had black topped (local access only).

Cop did not buy we were trying to get home (3 miles away).
