    Starter Demolished..(Pic)

    So..as you may have heard , I got a good deal on a 80 GS1000..L.

Anyway, ..the guy said "Runs great..just needs starter work."

The PO had just put on new tires, and a new starter clutch thingy..(Forget the term).

Well, I took the starter out, hoping I could just replace the brushes...
It sounded like sand in the starter.So..I took it apart..

    Heres what I found:

Needless to say, I couldn't rebuild her.Got a new starter thru Bandit..which actually came in a Ricks box...But was cheaper than Ricks price.
    Hmm..go figure.

I basically just wanted to post the pic...enjoy.

I do love a good spectacular failure.

New starter from BB eh? I probably would have gambled on eBay and a rebuild.

I would have asked here on the forum for a starter then eBay.

But at least you have a brand new starter now!

I'm just wondering how in the hell your old starter got destroyed like that?

if i were you i'd double check starter clutch that PO installed. it may still need work. looks like it ran with the engine and something failed creating a blender.

Knowing that the PO installed a new starter clutch ..I'm guessing when the old onw failed..maybe it kept the starter engaged until...well until this happened.Just my theory?..

I'd get one from a junkyard or ebay.

I never buy anything new, unless absolutely necessary.

Hey! I have seen one like that !!! Came out of my 850.. Never did figure out why it happened. I suspect the starter clutch stuck. Replaced the starter 15K miiles ago and it has worked fine.

Agreed. Clutch failed and left the starter engaged while the engine was running.

I'm just theorizing but wouldn't an engine driven starter generate quite a bit of current potentially burning something out?

There would not be continuity through the starter solenoid.
