RE: the recent GoPro thread in OT

I have gathered tons of information from this forum over many years without getting any credit for it because I have learned vicariously through my father, Steve. Passively lurking on the board hasn't earned me enough points to enter into forbidden land of OT discussion so I have to reply here with my video.

This video was shot with my GoPro Hero 2 mounted to the handlebars of (my brother) SuzukiKid's 1980 GS1000G. The initial video quality was nice and clear, but the engine vibration played havoc with the camera's internal stabilization and caused waves in the picture that changed with engine speed. The video was shot in 1080 then scaled down to 720 in iMovie to make it a bit easier to perform additional image stabilization (to minimize the waves) on my nearly ancient laptop. When I uploaded it to YouTube the tiny people that live in the internet offered to further stabilize the slightly wavy movie. I haven't checked on the final product from the tiny internet people, but here is a link anyway.

Original video, stabilized and text added, not edited in any other way - Original length, 9:33 - Original soundtrack, no music, just the sound the GS1000 engine propelling me on my first of several trips over this mountain.

I have more videos taken with this camera on several bikes, including CafeKid's ZRex, SuzukiKid's GS1000, SuzukiKids GS850, and my GS650 "Rat Bagger". I thought I had lost them a year ago when my laptop dove off of my bike onto the concrete garage floor and killed its hard drive. Fortunately, i'm a more prudent computer user than I thought and had backed up most (if not all) of my videos onto an external drive. I will be going through those videos between marathon homework and video games sessions and then uploading them to my YouTube account.

On your way up, that truck w/horse trailer parked off on right side of the road caught my eye. Looked like it came from other direction, so would have had to cross over your lane to get there. Hum...

The only place on that stretch where that can happen is at the top, where the scenic overlook is. Definitely not the place to be at the limit of traction.

True, Dave, this is the correct place, but he was referencing the GoPro thread in OT a week or so back, and in particular, posts 15-17 when Dogma asked if that video was out yet.

On top of that, since he has fewer than the minimum number of posts to be allowed in the hallowed ground of OT it only made more sense to post it in the proper place.

The "waving" or "jello effect" is caused by the use of a rolling shutter, CMOS sensor, which is very common in modern cameras. (3CCD cameras don't do this)

Shooting at 60 fps instead of 30 fps will minimize this. The faster the frame rate, the less "jello effect" you will see. On the HERO that means shooting 720/60 instead of 1080/30. (The new Hero 3 black edition is capable of 1080/60 and 720/120)

Heck, i have even been on Hwy 33. A very nice road.
I attended a CBX Club get-together in Marlinton, WV.
Hwy. 55/219 heading south from 33 for an hour or so to Marlinton was nice as well.
Most of the wind noise was missing from your video, very nice.

As I suspected above, that jiggle is from the rolling shutter.
Defiantly try 720/60p next time, I think you will like the improvement.

Except for some experimentation the previous weekend at the Brown County Rally, this was the first full-on test of the camera and what it could do. I know that he knows about the different resolution/frame rate settings, just not sure that he knew (at that time) which combination would work the best.

Thanks for the tips. As always, right after I buy my new toy, the better/faster/smaller/fancier version comes out. I'd love a hero 3, but I can't justify it since the only accessory I don't have for the hero 2 is the wifi backpack, and I'm getting that before memorial day. I'll give the increased frame rate a try the next time fair weather and my free time coincide. I'm hoping that my Venture 1300 will have less engine vibration to worry about so I can get some even nicer videos when it gets back to life later this year.
