I for sure had the same feelings for a long time until I started to get out of the "mainstream" so to speak. I personally like a peanutty and oaky bourbon like Eagle Rare or Hotel Tango No. 3. Scotches are a world all unto their own with different regions having a different flavor and method. For sweeter notes go get a Speyside or Highland, a cheap unoffending option being Glenfiddich 12 year. For you I would venture to say you may want to stay away from Islay scotch to not get woody and peaty smoke flavors.Originally posted by Cipher View Post

Older thread, but the other day I picked up some Four Roses, which I hadn't had in years.
Just the standard, under $30 bottle. I liked it and will have it again.Bob T. ~~ Play the GSR weekly photo game: Pic of Week Game

Probably a great way to describe a Four Roses, it's far from bad and nothing to blow your socks off. At about the same price I had gotten Johnnie Walker Red Label and wish I would have gotten the Four Roses instead because this wasn't what I expected from a JW scotch. Definitely put their blonde into a higher status for me.Originally posted by Baatfam View PostOlder thread, but the other day I picked up some Four Roses, which I hadn't had in years.

Have you had a Maker's Mark? For about the same price, where I shop, it's a good pick up.

Maker's was one of the first "decent" bourbons I tried. Had a friend always had Makers with 3 cubes, so the first time I tried bourbon, that's what I ordered.Originally posted by Alf View PostHave you had a Maker's Mark? For about the same price, where I shop, it's a good pick up.
I still have it occasionally, and find it very drinkable, just a little sweeter than I like.
My preference is a little more rye, a little less wheat. Thus, another go to for me is Wild Turkey 101.Bob T. ~~ Play the GSR weekly photo game: Pic of Week Game

I suffer from really bad Spinal Cord injuries. AA friend of mine runs the towns Transfer Station (The Dump), and told me to come right up. A lady brought in a crate of whiskey and he told me to grab any 2 bottles I wanted. I was not allowed to sell them, or tell anyone he gave them to me, he classified them as toxic was! I chose a 1957 bottle of Royal Crown, and a bottle of this whiskey that had a label on it that just read, "Tennessee Sippin' Whiskey". It caught my eye. I went home an poured a shot of it, it went down, almost like water, but did not make it past my tongue. I thought for a second, "Did this go bad? Then my Brain had this mild warm explosion, and I felt the best I had felt in years. I took three weeks to drive that tall slim bottle, it was precious to me. I have never been able to find a picture of it, or learn anything from the bottle. The Royal Crown tasted like the new stuff, so I guess that pretty much is very stable stuff. My 2 cents worth.
If anyone knows about the Tennessee Sippin' Whiskey, please let me know. Otherwise, I actually don't drink alcohol at all.

I find that if you mix it with cola, ginger ale, or lemon lime it really doesn't matter what the bourbon or even generic whiskey it is, just get the cheapest rot gut you can find. I like it with bourbon and the cheapest is usually Evan Williams in many places. In fact that is not bad tasting bourbon on its own, and I read some bourbon sites that do double blind test, and it stands up to competition.
Yeah,B&C is a super sweet drink. I don't apologize for liking caramel/sweet flavor. The odd thing is that I get hangovers and stomach problems from most every other thing I drink especially wine and wheat beer, but not bourbon and cola. Go figure, it just agrees with me and is cheap too. At one time I tried to understand scotch and try to be sophisticated. I hate the stuff, it tastes like a peat bog set on fire.

Never could acquire a taste for bourbon, whisky, scotch, rye. Maybe I haven’t tried hard enough. Worked as a bartender for a while in the early 90s so had occasion to sample most, even what were considered top shelf, I guess: Glenlivet, Glenfiddich. I did go through a JD/coke faze in college. Last week a friend brought over a bottle of Maker’s Mark. Had a sip, jury is still out. Didn’t hate it. More research required. I just normally go for a good heavy dark lager or stout.Last edited by Rich82GS750TZ; 11-11-2022, 06:21 PM.Links

When touring the Makers Mark Distillery, I was able to "Dip" my own bottle!
It was a very educational tour. You got to taste the different stages of aging. The first one tasted like gasoline. But as the whisky ages, it builds flavor and mellows out. A fun tour if you ever get the chance.

It's either a good bourbon or Irish whiskey for me. Wine, champagne and beer don't do well with my stomach.Originally posted by oldGSfan View PostI find that if you mix it with cola, ginger ale, or lemon lime it really doesn't matter what the bourbon or even generic whiskey it is, just get the cheapest rot gut you can find. That's what I was thinking. I know of Nikka, but didn't know that they did a coffee whiskey at all. If this is at all similar in the idea of still house "black bourbon", I will be very happy. That said, in my somewhat limited experience with japanese whiskies, it would be best on the rocks or in a cold brew irish coffee.Originally posted by Baatfam View PostI do enjoy Japanese whiskeys, but that is one I haven't tried....Or seen.

I respect the take, but islay scotches are definitely not for everyone, and it can be doubly said for blended vs single malts that don't get rounded off.Originally posted by oldGSfan View PostI find that if you mix it with cola, ginger ale, or lemon lime it really doesn't matter what the bourbon or even generic whiskey it is, just get the cheapest rot gut you can find. Out of the three wise men, as long as it isn't JD it's fine by me, but Mr.Beam and his kin have a special place on my shelf. (Though to cut on the sugar from mixers totties and cowboys are tasty too)

Welcome fellow new guy, I saw your intro post yesterday, and thank you for further my legitimizing of a fine vice. Thank you too for the story. I'll definitely keep an eye out for some of that "Tennessee Sippin' Whiskey". To be fair most of my favorite sippers come from some small batch distillers in the hills.Originally posted by Suzukian View PostI suffer from really bad Spinal Cord injuries.
