    Fake news, Pearson Airport "heist".

The words fake news have become fairly common of late and in this instance the official position on the event is completely false.

The news story at this link claims that 20 million dollars worth o f gold and valuable were stolen from Toronto's Pearson Airport and that such an event is "very rare"

    https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/very-rare...olen-1.6364327

I do not doubt that such an event may have occurred, but the official description is very distant from truth and I see no value at all in making false statements about it.

Theft/smuggling of various sorts at the airport are very, very, far from the described "very rare"

Fake news? Very rare heist at Toronto Pearson Airport??? Did this not happen? Or does it happen often there?

Sandy, it is a combination of theft and smuggling, and it happens VERY often. Twenty million is not even the biggest value one I know of. I recall a group of people who arranged for disappearance of goods that came into Toronto via American Airlines cargo. When they were caught they already had TWO containers on a truck and another one waiting..

When it all came out there was something like sixty million dollars involved..
            .
The hard part, for me, was that my (now ex-) wife worked with some of those involved and I also knew them..

Since then I have become rather jaded about these things as I got involved with airport security.

It's real . Ron is taking issue with the " very rare " part of the story ......

Canada's where the infamous scammer Charles Ponzi ran off to when things where getting hot for him in the U.S. He polished his game up there while doing time in Montreal and returned to the U.S. where he became a BIG TIME scammer.

I'd imagine the yearly total of theft and smuggling knocks that heist into a cocked hat.

Had a long talk with a Montreal airport baggage handler once.
he said he was aghast at the thievery. One instance was cutting a leather patch off a f1 Ferrari cover.

Yes. Many, many, times that amount.

                            A personal note on this:

I once got a letter of commendation from RCMP. they sent it to my employer about my having found a shipment of drugs they said was worth a million dollars.
I thought it was a big deal, but when I spoke with the head of their drug squad he told me that a million dollar shipment was nothing, as they catch much bigger shipments every week....and they know they only catch a small percentage of what comes in..

Bluntly stated, baggage theft is a huge problem.

You may not know it, but many bags can be opened in only two seconds....literally....and then they can be re-closed, with no visible indication that it was done..
