Mecum Motorcycle Auction Las Vegas (Jan 24-28 2024)

Thought I would be there, but things have changed and I will no longer be going.

The place I live at just got hit with two separate snow storms, with blizzard type winds,and wouldn't you know it, my two stage snowblower developed carburetor problems. Probably had it parked too close to the GS1000.

So I am still working on doing snow removal etc, etc, etc..

Obviously you watched the Mecum Auto Auction on the weekend?

A few years ago there was a 1968 L88 convertible low mileage ORIGINAL Corvette, all the stickers still on it. The owner was hoping for a quarter mil. Started at $200,000, went to 3, 4, than jumped to $600,000. Sold for over $800,000!

Unrestored, low mileage '68 'Vette in excellent condition with L88 and convertible options. I'd say that beats 7 highly restored split window coupes (even though they were all stick shift).

Did you see the Mecum top 10 shows? Mopar, Pontiac and Chevrolet. Number 2 Chevy was a '69 COPO Camaro with L88 engine, completely un-badged. Nothing on the exterior to differentiate it from the cheapest 6 cylinder '69 Camaro. Who knew such things even existed?

I don't watch the car ones that often...not really my thing. I have probably watched the Barrett Jackson one more when it comes to cars.

On Friday we had a 20min conversation with the owner of the bike before it went to bidding. Older guy from Texas....seemed very straight up guy....had a big collection and had a number of bikes for sale there.....there was also was controversary on a "Cooley"...that was sold for $21,500....that the frame vin indicated that it was a gs1000 and not an S

Hijinx at Mecum and BJ auctions is nothing new and it isn’t limited to cars and bikes. Lots of concerns/issues with their memorabilia auctions. The porcelain sign and neon clocks etc are quite often not what they are represented as. And these bikes are chump change compared to some of those items.

The engine looks more like a 90's vintage vs. 70's.

Great time in Vegas....not really my kind of place but when you are with 7 good friends...including two you've know since high school....well you get the picture

Ok you guys already know I'm not very mature.....I couldn't resist bringing the fake oil spill we made up a few years ago, to put under bikes at the auction....lol....I put it under this Captain America replica...and when I did it I noticed that it was already leaking some oil...lol

















And a cooley that went for $21,500....not original paint...rumour that it was a plain 1000....it was advertised as 640 miles...but why would it need repainting? Also noticed that the mirrors had two different black finishes on them.....hmmm

Then Saturday we headed to The Hot Shoe Museum on Fremont St....owned by flat track legend Gene Woods. They were inducting Saturday night.
None other that Mert Lawwill (AMA #1 Flat Track racer and stared in "On Any Sunday"...) was there...I met him in 2017 at the Quail in Monterey when I showed my Cooley. Told him we were there from Canada and he proceeded to tell us stories of him racing in Canada...what a treat!





Vegas...lol We also went up in the Ferris Wheel...individual pods that fir up to 40 people with bar service. We had fantastic views of the now famous Las Vegas Spere where U2 was playing....looked at tickets....starting at $700....I like U2 but not that much..lol

Everyone should experience Vegas once at least...two of my buddies it was their first time
