    Dickie Betts

    R.I.P. Dick.

First saw him in November 1971, their first concert since Duane's accident. We wondered if we'd get refunds for our tickets (Carnegie Hall).

But they went on. Opened with Statesboro Blues, and Dickie played slide. He saved the band. A year later, Berry died.

2016 XL883L sigpic Two-tone blue and white. Almost 42 hp! Status: destroyed, now owned by the insurance company. The hole in my memory starts an hour before the accident and ends 24 hours after.

    One of my favorite bands.

Dickie Betts wrote some incredible songs. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed being a standout in my mind.

Wow, sad to hear. Glad I got to see Allman Bros. Band 1994? Headlined the Horde Tour. Great Woods near Plymouth MA. Fantastic show. Great lineup. Big Head Todd, Blues Traveler, Sheryl Crow, many more.

This is what I consider to be his "Anthem" as a guitarist, a familiar tune to most of us.

Sorry for the skew off Dicky, but this band could be considered part of the family...

                      I'll explain: Tedeschi Trucks Band
Derek Trucks, nephew of Butch Trucks. Butch Trucks, was one of the two drummers and both were founding members of Allman Bros. Both drummers and Dicky Betts were in the band most of the history.

And Derek played guitar in the late90s-early 2000s versions of the Allman Bros.

Jacksonville was the epicenter of the Southern Rock genre. The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, Molly Hatchet all formed and did the local venues/events here on the way to the big time. The Tedeschi Trucks Band which is also based here is no doubt the closest thing we have to those sounds now. They have taken a musical heritage and advanced it.

Those first two on the list, the Allmans and Skynrd, essentially defined Southern Rock. Both of those groups were leveled by tragedies (motorcycle and plane crashes) just as they were reaching their peak of popularity. The genre never fully regained its ascendant role in the music scene after. It continued on but it was not the same.

I was/am a big fan of Southern Rock. In the 1970's I thought it a welcome throwback to earliest days of rock and roll coming after years of a more 'pop' rock, the British invasion, the psychedelic sound, protest rock, glitter rock, disco arrgh!! Now I liked some songs of all of those (except one) but none of them reminded me of the passion I felt for the music of Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, et al. Southern Rock did.

Godspeed, Mr Betts. You added something to many lives.
