Gwad ! I sympathize with you and the pain you're dealing with. Hoping you get relief soon.

20 years ago I tried a chiropractor for my shoulder pain. Didn't work. Prescription anti-inflammatory pills did.

A week before Labor Day I started to have hip pain. 2 weeks in I went to urgent care and it was diagnosed as a piriformis muscle issue. 2 months later the pain was getting intense! Sept and Oct were filled with PT,Doctors,Chiros,XRays,Topicals,Drugs(anti inflams/muscle relaxers/prednisone/Moms Vicodin/daughters oxy........) NOTHING HELPED and now its going down the front of my leg, I'm not sleeping and It's getting hard to walk. I ordered orthopedics. More XRays and then a MRI. Bulged Disc at L4/L5 and a pinched L4 nerve.

I got a TFESI (Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection) Cortisone with lidocaine into my back. It was the most painful thing I have ever felt. Like being hit with a bat!!! That didn't help either. Now I'm scheduled for a Discectomy on Jan9. It's outpatient but I got to be put out and intubated. They clean out the canal where the nerve comes through the spine by removing bone and trimming the disc. Oh happy day.........

        Exactly...

Do you live in a drug desert?!?

For years now, I've been hearing doctors say, "this is a new painkiller...it's non-addictive. It won't make you drowsy and it won't get you high."
Translation: it won't kill the pain. If the first thing a doctor says is "it won't make you drowsy," I don't wait to hear the second thing. I'm out the door to the next doctor. And the next.
If that doesn't work, I can always see Julio down by the school yard.

Merry Christmas everybody! I hope things work out.

Rob, All the drugs I tried for pain relief didn't work. My wife gave me Tylenol PM to sleep and it knocked it down a notch. I'm now taking 4 Tylenol a day and the 2 PMs at night. It helps. My spine surgeon has me on Gabapentin for the nerve pain but I don't think it does anything.

I never did get the shot .... I was hoping by reopening this thread I could get a time frame for how long the pain lasted . I'm guessing because I made no more updates beyond the one above that it was around a month or so ..... Anyhoo it's back . But this time it is different . It is in my neck and has migrated from the right side to the left side . And hurts like Hell .... Not sure if it's arthritis or not because it feels more like what I would imagine a pinched nerve feels like. Been about a week now ...... Haven't decided on a plan of attack ......

I’ve had shots in my knees, definitely helped, its been well over a year now. That said, I woke one night with my left arm asleep, shook the arm and went back to sleep. Still asleep the next morning, called the doc, saw him the next day and gat a referral to the top neural surgeon in Portland. One week later I was in a neck brace after seeing the surgeon and scheduled for neck fusion of c3-4-5. 5 days later the deed was done. I have about 50% feeling left in my left hand which is now quite numb.

Don’t wait go see the doctor.

                  Chiropractor.

Depending on the specific problem, many chiropractors now avoid the earlier twist and bend, and instead use a hand-held "bump" device that is quite gentle and works..

They have to be trained in how to use it as the pressure/impact is infinitely variable and the operator must know exactly what he/she is doing.

I first had it used on me about fifteen years ago and I was astonished at how effective it was.

Sounds like a bulged disc pinching a nerve. Thats what I had last year at L4/L5 (low back) pinching my L4 nerve according to an MRI. Got a cortisone shot but that didn't help so early Dec I scheduled surgery for Jan 2025. By Christmas It started feeling better, so I opted out of the surgery.

Now I have pain like you. Left neck and shoulder, numbness/tingling. Sux! It's been like that for 8 months. After my last ordeal I feel all the treatments/drugs did nothing. Don't know how long I want to ride this out,,,,,, or where to go for some relief.

Old age, and accumulated injuries, suck, man! If I could take a shot, and avoid pain, I'd camp out to be first in line! Cortizone is pre-school level medicine. Why are we even discussing it here? Take the shot, and see if it helps. If not, don't get another.

Old age does suck. This one is different than the previous arthritis .... It feels very much like a pinched nerve . Like I've had lots of times in my youth and generally goes away in a couple of hours ..... This has been five days now ..... Turning my neck is excruciating ......I just went for my walk and someone startled me coming the other way through the door and it was like sticking my neck in a wall socket .....

Garth, the practice of chiropractic has changed considerably in the last few years.

It is Saturday night, and most will be closed until Monday, but on Monday make a phone call or two and find a chiropractor that uses the method I mentioned earlier.

It not only works, it works well and is also much safer to use on neck and upper spine than the old method of using torque.

You may not even have to lie down on the bed/bench as it is often done while you are standing.

I have had the problem you describe....it was .fixed in just a few minutes.....no pain, no twisting. I did get the treatment while standing upright.

I'm not anti Chiropractor ..... I had a girl friend in my youth who was a ballet dancer and the whole company was constantly visiting one and they all swore by him ...... And I can't find an Indian barber to give me that surprise they always give you at the end of a haircut so I'll look into it ......
