Old Age, Memory, Surgical Trauma, And Music

I have played classical and flamenco guitar off and on for most of my life . And when I retired ten years ago I decided to treat myself to two luthier built guitars ..... A Flamenco Blanca with wooden tuning pegs pegs { $4000 } and a classical double top { $8500 } ...... I was enjoying getting back into it now that I had unlimited time ....

Then I got sick and went to the hospital . What should have been simple surgery became a .... " We're not sure if he is going to make it " notification to my family followed by a month in ICU and a month in a ward ..... And I had surgical trauma . I thought I saw the pope { Catholic hospital } I thought I was a character in a book and if I found out I was a character in a book I would die { Something Kafkaish about that } . The guy visiting his wife in the next bed from Argentina invited me to visit him in South America ..... { a nurse later told me that I often had a conversation with someone who wasn't there. and there was no bed next to me } .....These are very real memories to this day though I know they did not happen .....My arms were tied to the bed railings to prevent me from escaping . Trust me on this . If you give someone 24 hours a day with no other mission than escaping he's going to pull it off a few times. And I did which resulted in one or two footsteps and crashing to the floor . And the resulting trip down to X-ray to see if I broke anything ......

Then I got out . And about a month later I pulled a guitar out of it's case . Everything was gone. Not only could I not remember how to play. I couldn't remember anything to play . I just sat there and stared at it ..... Disgusted I put it back in it's case and there they have sat for five years. About two months ago I tried again with the attitude that if I had to start from scratch I would .......I found that there is lot of lessons one can take on line . At first I investigated local teachers and sure enough many of them teach on line . I have a camera in my monitor so that would work out well . Then I discovered several on line programs that looked pretty good from their free demos . I signed up for three of them and started to practice ...... And then this happened .... After adopting a somewhat irregular practice schedule . One of the pieces I had forgotten came back . It suddenly appeared in my head and I quickly played it over and over to make sure I didn't forget it..... A simple three finger tremolo used in flamenco came back though no piece to use it in did ...... Then another classical piece I suddenly remembered how it sounds . Though I once knew it well I now need to practice a reverse arpeggio and still only remember bits and pieces of it ..... But there is an online lesson for the piece as well as reverse arpeggio exercises ...... I'm going to tackle it ......

So am I a victim of old age memory { 71 years old } or still experiencing surgical trauma ? ......I fully admit to still crossing to the other side of the street when I pass St. Paul's hospital out of the fear that a giant hook will shoot out the door and drag me back in ......

Don't have an answer to your question, sorry. I'm two years behind you, so I wouldn't mind understanding, though.

But hey, it's great to hear you've recovered some of your skills.

Odd thing to lose. Since I got my skull opened 1.5 yes ago I see and recall people but can't remember names.
I also begin tasks and if I need a tool or ingredient forget the task and stand spellbound. Joy of fentanyl.

music and old movies are potent memory triggers. I try to listen and watch things from different eras in my life.
one odd development is I can rarely watch a movie in one sitting. Music that once moved me to ecstatic floods of tears falls short.

you went through a trauma but don't just attribute it to one thing. You'd be rusty as hell. Do you just have re cc all issues or has technique suffered to the same degree.

as for age do not despair my friend bilingual household raised lost fluency in English trapped with French wife and kids.
he expressed shock he couldn't speak his mind with ease. Mid 30s at the time.

Oh, the things we go through traveling through this old world, and usually the golden yrs. are the worst... Great to hear things are getting better, even if more gradually that it probably would have been 50 yrs. ago. I liked the part, "If I had to start from scratch I would", that said a lot... Keep it up, and We'll be waiting for a video or audio of you play'in like you did in the past.

Memory is a frangible yet very strong thing. and quite capable of recovery.

Time passes and some memories may get dislodged from their reference points, and you think they are lost, but they are probably still there. You just need to find them again..

I think your working on it is a VERY good thing to do and you will quite possibly resurrect much, perhaps all, of that which you currently think is forgotten.

Most of us, maybe all of us, will at some time have memory blanks. Very often that is stress-induced and we do not recognize or acknowledge that concern, and not recognizing it increases stress. I would strongly recommend that you do not stress, but work with it instead.

You have told us you have a really good sound system with streaming ability......OK...use it. Get a song list and pick whatever appeals to you and then listen to it. While doing that shift your mind to making the sounds you hear on your own instrument.

Many, many people have learned this "play-by-ear" method using it from scratch, but you have a background that can be lifted from within and brought into today's light.

          Play with it......literally

I think part of the reason we lose memories as we grow older is because we gradually gain more and more stuff to remember, when you're 20 you only have about 10 years of experiences to remember.

When your 60 you have 50 years of stuff to remember

Exercise is the answer, physical or mental. Glad you're getting better, stay with it.

When I was in a nursing home for 4 months I had my guitar brought to me. Great rehab, mental and physical.

That's one thing I have noticed .... Previous to picking up the guitar again occasional bouts of arthritis in my fingers that would last for fifteen or twenty minutes . Since picking up the guitar again none in two months. Not saying this is the reason why but so far so good .....

Joints need to move to be lubed. Apparently tendons can partially ossify if not moved.

can you play "mood for a day" in 95 somewhere in the Montreal metro. This guy was playing and when he stopped my buddy showing off for his short term Kampuchean girlfriend dropped a twenty and asked. "Mood for a day?"
the guy nodded and played it note perfect. Then he packed and left.

Howe is getting old now. I wonder how he manages.
