18 motorcycle crashes in one day at Sturgis Rally in South Dakota

Here's why I avoid these guys like an STD on the road. I hope this link works: 18 motorcycle crashes in one day at Sturgis Rally in South Dakota

Not to beat a dead horse, but could a little training be too much to ask? Note that every single incident was 100% rider screw-up. Perhaps a little alcohol, but that's not mentioned.

Let me save this and see if my link worked. I've sorta forgotten how to use these fora.

Edit: * OK, looks like two possible mechanical failures. Or alleged failures.

I couldn’t get either of Robert’s links to work. Here’s another.

No reports of any fresh grass cippings on the roadways on which these incidents occurred.

In all seriousness, my condolences to the family of the one rider who lost his life yesterday.

A common theme in many of the incidents:
“The rider was not wearing a helmet and sustained serious………”

      day 1 totals:
In addition to crashes, the South Dakota Highway Patrol reported that from 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, there were a total of 21 DUI arrests, 31 misdemeanor drug arrests and 14 felony drug arrests.

Highway Patrol also issued a total of 252 citations and 592 warnings from Saturday to Sunday.

As much chance of absolution as:
"But don't you see? I had to kill him."
Maybe louder pipes would have prevented these accidents?

"Failed to make the turn" is a common complaint there, too.
Perhaps if they rode more they'd turn more.

I'd have to imagine that the police and EMTs dread the rally.

Someone needs to tell them a bike stops quicker using the brakes than it does sliding on its side.

Two friends from where I worked made the journey last year. Los Angeles to Sturgis, and back. They left in the middle of the night, to beat the heat through Death Valley. One guy, 70 years old, bought a Harley for his son, so he could come also. Dude bought the bike on a credit card, and sold it as soon as he got back. It cost him something like $6000. I teased him, but honestly, he was over the moon. A real bucket list trip.

Reminds me of 20 years ago ? Whenever it was all the motorcycle build and related show were on T.V .

From coworkers and acquaintances and in-laws everybody was running out buying bikes and losing their azz when they either got them repossessed, sold to buy something bigger and or buying all the chrome pieces and fancy exhaust and then after a few years selling .

My daughter in laws cousin was probably my best story.

He was a tough outlaw been in the pen several times for fighting and drugs.

Everyone in their family started buying bikes it was hilarious, few of them didn't even have a driver's license.

This "cousin" never had a real job ,seriously ! He'd work some cash job for a week here and there.

He bought a harley from the local harley dealer, dint know if it was brand new , if it wasn't new it was close to it.

He got a loan after three weeks at local t.v dinner pot pie making factory ,

He quit a week after getting the bike, then he hid it at one house or another trying to dodge the repo man.

Somehow he tore the bike up and it was practically a piece of junk after only three month of him owning it.

I remember him telling me the price was around $12,000 and he was on the hook for twice that .

That was years ago , and he's been in and out of jail two or three times and I know he never did even make one payment on that bike after he took possession of it.

Sturgis can get intense. A friend from the fire department who goes every year says most crashes come from rider mistakes. With so many people in one place, long rides, fatigue and sometimes alcohol, even skilled riders can get caught off guard.

                              Here's some final tallies from the week;
The 85th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally ended with four fatalities and 80 injuries from 66 crashes, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol. This year saw an increase in injury crashes but fewer drug arrests compared to previous rallies. Fatal wrecks included single-motorcycle crashes in the Black Hills, a pickup-versus-motorcycle collision near Rapid City, and a police pursuit crash outside Sturgis.

"South Dakota troopers have made the largest crystal meth seizure in state history. Highway Patrol says a traffic stop on I-90 in Sturgis led to the discovery of about 207 pounds of meth, worth an estimated $12 million. A drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to the stash. The 42-year-old driver, a non-citizen, was arrested and is now facing multiple drug charges. The vehicle was also seized"
