I recall hearing of such things as portable atomic weapons , aka dirty bombs, , but never fully believed what I heard.

According to this article, more than some of what I heard was true.

"Dirty bombs" are just conventional explosives designed to scatter nuclear material around a site. They are not nuclear bombs.
The ones in the article were proper atomic bombs, albeit small.

I always thought they were the same thing.
