Bring in National Guard! Bring in the marines! Americans are under attack (H)

I will stop laughing soon, but I have to post this first.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- In California, some neighbors are on alert after a series of frightening attacks on people -- all perpetrated by a vicious squirrel. The injuries needed quick medical attention.

"It clamped onto my leg. The tail was flying up here. I was like, 'Get it off me, get off me!' I didn't want to touch it," said Joan Heblack.

It's the last thing Joan Heblack expected on her morning walk through Lucas Valley in San Rafael.

"It came out of nowhere. I didn't see him running up to me at all," Heblack said.

Heblack, suddenly attacked by a squirrel, which clawed and bit her legs. The wounds were bad enough that she went to the ER.

"Very scary. How do you get a squirrel attached to your leg off," Heblack said.

"This is beautiful, now it's following us, until she almost killed me," said Isabel Campoy.

Campoy and her niece Carmen were also attacked while walking in the same area off Mount Lassen Drive.

"Squirrel went from the floor tried to jump up to my face, I tried to protect my face, my arm was completely overcome by squirrel. Finally it jumped off, by then I was full of blood, I run to the emergency room," Campoy said.

When I saw the blood on her arm, I said, "Oh my God," said Carmen Campoy.

Flyers are now posted, alerting residents about the incidents. Neighbors say about five people have been attacked, possibly by the same squirrel, with a goldish color. It's also been the talk of Nextdoor.

"Unfortunately, it's not unheard of," said Vanessa Potter from WildCare in San Rafael.

Potter said squirrels are not vectors for rabies. The aggressive behavior was likely due to the animal being fed and cared for by humans when it was small.

"If they associate people with food, they're not afraid of them. They will look for food. If they don't get it, there can be frustrations. They can be territorial of their space," Potter said.

Experts warn the public against feeding wild animals.

In the meantime, neighbors are enjoying the outdoors but watching their backs. Campoy is trying to heal and move forward.

"It hurts to touch the skin. I am putting my best power and mind in order to say I'll survive this," Campoy said.

Neighbors say there has been no sign of the suspected squirrel in several days.

The story brought a vivid memory of squirrels that "attacked" me when I first moved into my present house.

There is a large deck behind the house with a 2x6 covering. On one side it was further covered across the top by a very active and very large vine that had grown to cover that half entirely.
At the front of the deck, and above the steps into the yard, was an area where the previous owners had enclosed a small area by installing boards across one full section, about 48 x 20 inches.
That in turn, provided a place for squirrels to build a nest. As I would learn, there were at least a dozen squirrels living there.

My girlfriend was visiting and she was annoyed with the squirrels, so I got a spray bottle and a board and pushed the board up against the nest area, which disturbed the squirrels.
The nozzle on the bottle was set to squirt, not spray and whenever a squirrel came into view I "shot" it with water.
The "fight" lasted about five minutes, during which my girlfriend was afraid of them jumping at her and she took shelter inside the house and watched the "battle"
    from safety..

The squirrels got VERY angry and hissed, spit, growled (as best a squirrel can do) ran about on the 2x6s and jumped whenever they got "shot"....which was often.

Several times a squirrel actually tried directly attacking me by jumping from above or from the side.
This was all close range, so I was able to "shoot" them in the face every time. That caused them to lose focus on their attack and drop to the ground.....where they got shot again. None of them ever touched me.

I could not stop laughing through all of it!

    The whole thing was hilarious!

At the end, the squirrels chose to decamp and went off to find a new residence.

The time included a couple of necessary "reloads"...with fresh water.

EDIT.....is there a recommendation to issue spray bottles in California?

    Or

Just "arm" a squad of kids with water guns to do the job...they will love it

My walking route includes a loop through the local park, where there are lots of squirrel's. I carry a bag of almonds, and toss one to each critter that comes up to me.

Squirrel's have a pretty bad attention span. To make sure they find the almond tossed their way, I hold it out, and wait from them to come up, then I toss it at their feet. 90% of the time they see it, if I do this. If tossing the nut from afar, the % drops greatly.

One day, I was holding out the nut, waiting for one the squirrel's to pay attention so I could throw it, when out of the blue, it bit my finger. Dang! It got me good too, right at the corner of the fingernail, so blood was flowing freely. Ouch!

After experiencing this, whenever I see someone at the park, trying to get a squirrel to get out of their hand, I warn them. They look at me all sideways. No way a squirrel would bite someone!!! Ha, little do they know...

This reminds me of the deadly squirrel scene in the movie Christmas Vacation. Luckily, we don't have such angry critters here in Australia.

And speaking of squirrel's...they cause a fair number of vehicle accidents. People freak out when one runs out into the road, then they crash their car or motorcycle trying to avoid it. It happened to a brother of a friend. Another time, riding my bike in the mountains, where the road was closed while an evac helicopter was being brought in to airlift someone out, the highway patrol guy said "the mystery squirrel got another".
