Children aged 17 or younger will face a lifelong ban on buying cigarettes, as the Tobacco and Vapes Bill clears Parliament.

Both the Commons and Lords have settled on a final draft of the "landmark" legislation that aims to stop anyone born after 1 January 2009 from taking up smoking to create a smoke-free generation.

When it gets royal assent, ministers will also have new powers to regulate tobacco, vaping and nicotine products, including their flavours and packaging.





It is part of a series of measures aimed at tackling the health effects of smoking, one of the UK's leading causes of preventable death, disability and ill health.




Vaping will be banned in cars carrying children, in playgrounds and outside schools and at hospitals, expanding smoke-free laws.

Vaping would still be allowed outside hospitals in a bid to support those trying to quit.

Outdoor hospitality venues like pub gardens and wider open spaces such as beaches and private outdoor spaces are not included in the plans.

People will also be able to continue smoking and vaping in their homes.

Health minister Baroness Merron told the Lords on Monday: "This afternoon marks the end of this Bill's journey throughout Parliament.

When I was in Australia a few years ago they were kicking around this very idea. I'm not sure anything came of it but evidently it had huge support from all age groups especially the younger group. As for the slippery slope of government control, the government has been taxing and restricting smoking for decades for obvious reasons and this is hopefully going to be seen as just another step in that direction. Most governments, right or wrong, seem to think it's their duty to protect people from themselves or moreso from becoming a burden on society.

I maintain that it is a slippery slope. If the government were to determine that alcohol was similarly hazardous and then to ban it in perpetuity for citizens born after 2009, despite the real fact of declining alcohol consumption among that very age segment, I would take the side of the citizen over the government were someone born in 2010 to decide to drink in 2028.

I was buying cigarettes at age 13 and never had a problem. During COVID I couldn't buy them due to my drivers license being expired! Last summer I bought a 1/4lb of pot at a dispensary on the Seneca reservation as a favor for a friend in Philly (cheap) without showing an ID.

While I acknowledge the negative effects of smoking.. I think this is just government overreach. Wonder when they'll ban cheeseburgers?

Always been strange things with our govt. rules and regs... Maybe just me but they made Marijuana illegal while whiskey and Vodka are legal... From the folks I've seen and been around the Whiskey & Vodka can make you not know who you are, where you are, nor how you got there, while the marijuana makes you happy & hungry. Go figure.

I'm no fan of the permastoned culture that now regales my senses when I'm behind some stoner's Camry and he pulls away from a stoplight as a cloud of THC blows out of his window, but I'm also very much against banning things like that because I think people should have a right to smoke it even if I wish they'd do so at home.

Not that I've got anything against the idea .... But how the Hell is that going to work ? Are smokers going to have to provide I.D to prove they were born before January 1 2009 every time they buy a pack of smokes ? ...... Sounds like a logistical nightmare ......

At 63 I'm still required to show a valid ID when I buy my bulk tobacco and rolling papers at Dollar General, many times they scan the bar code on the back to verify it. The employees say it's a very strictly enforced company policy in which case I usually reply "I've got a bong that's older than you"

That's the thing that irks me the most about that crowd, they seems to believe that since it's less harmful than it means it's completely harmless. When Michigan was getting medical use on the ballot in 2008 I became a pariah amongst the activists for suggesting they start acting like adults when it came to their use, made an awful lot of enemies but luckily some lifetime friends too.

I'm 73 .... While in the liquor store recently I noticed the girl in front of me being " carded " .... Being a smart a$$ I asked the salesperson why she didn't ask for my I.D. ? ... Her reply was ... " I'm sorry sir, but we don't have any senior's sales this week " ,,,, Best comeback I've heard in a while ......

Around here, smoking is becoming quite rare. I suspect it's related to restrictions spreading to the point where people don't want to fuss with finding a place to smoke, so they just quit. Anyway, an outright ban wouldn't add much, other than more nanny restrictions. And how could they allow pot smoking, while banning tobacco?

About 40 years ago I read a study on ganja smoking in the Caribbean, and long term lung effects.
Turned out, there wasn't much difference between smoking tobacco and ganga over the years.
