Are you sure Rob??? That'd be a first. Hard for me to imagine any Sportster could win anything.1983 GS1100E, 1983 CB1100F, 1991 GSX1100G, 1996 Kaw. ZL600 Eliminator, 1999 Bandit 1200S, 2005 Bandit 1200S, 2000 Kaw. ZRX 1100Comment

Hard to believe, but Sportsters used to win everything! The very first issue of Cycle World, stated that, "If you're riding a Sportster you're either going to or coming from a race."

Find the fastest before the mid '60s...
I do believe Rob is correct.
When the Sportster came out '57, it was designed to compete with the British bikes of the time.
It was a popular race bike into the mid '60s.
The Japanese weren't in the picture yet. We had still to met the nicest people.

I believe that up until the late 60s, Sportsters were among the quickest production bikes, running the quarter mile in a dead heat with the CB750 and yes, even the Kawasaki Mach III (low to mid 13s IIRC). But that was no bragging feat, as it had a nearly 400 cc advantage. I'll check my facts and get back with the correct opinion.
