AHHHH...I dont see that in its futrue!!! Too nice and to scarse (from what i am understanding). Be a nice bike show bike and casual ride from time to time.

That is a tremendous find! Really Sweet, especially in that condition. Don't remember seeing too many of them, as the Honda CB750K was the sales grabber. The KZ Z1 900 came out about then, and Yamaha Twin 750 went by the way to the Yamaha 750 triple, which they added a 4th cylinder and produced the XS11 Eleven (1100cc, king of the mid range roll on.)
I had a '76 XS650, your bike reminds me of that. Unfortunately I had to sell it before I tired of it when I left Alaska. The vibration made me feel like it had more power than it really did. The bike had a nice feel and handled good, fit me perfectly.
Here's a pic with me on the XS650 in Alaska back in '78, yours looks just as good! I think you'll enjoy the gobs of low end torque!

Steve , I had a 1980 XS 650 Standard for a while..I know about the low end and the vibrations..I called it the nut nummer because after a while the vibes made the general area that came in contact numb..like if your foot feel asleep. Glad the pics are bringing some joy to you and maybe others that have viewed them. The carbs are all done. Soon as i get another full day off they will go on and the first start in nearly 20 years will be attempted. I plan on having a video of her when shes running of her own free will again. Stay tuned in the next few days.

All I need at this point is a front master cylinder because the originals bore was SEVERELY pitted and unusable. I got a line on a new NOS one still in the box. Soon as I get her fired and sure shes not suffering any of the damages from the fore mentioned oil problems ( which i dont think it has them from kicking her ovr a bit ) I will get the master and tires and she will then be ridable again. Ive already got the front caliper seals and cleaned the insides of it up and thats all ready to go as well. When i drained the oil tank and sump, the oil came out alost like new and there werent any metal shavings on either plug magnets, so thats whu I am feeling so confident in the engine being safe and sound!!

Chuck, are you planning on using a synthetic oil in it? If you are, I've used Amsoil 20w50. Of all the oils I've used, that oil was the most shear stable of the bunch.

Yes on the synthetic Dale. Randy has pointed me toward a synthetic oil that supposed to be top shelf. I trust his judgement. Like i said, when i drained the tank and oil sump it was almost l;ike new oil that came out and no shavings on any of the magnets, so i confident the engine doesnt have any issues and I plan on keeping it as well protected as possible...seeing what the alternatives could be.

Chuck, I think using synthetic on that particular bike is a very wise idea. When you find out what JB Randy recommended, let me know. I'm curious as to His opinion.

Im running over there about 10 and getting the oil and I am gonna use the balsting cabinet for a few minutes as well. Then when i get home around 8:30 tonight from work I will post what he gives me. If he says its good oil then I am confident that it is.

Plan on doing an oil change after about a half hour's running...The oil looks clean because all the sediment is sitting on the bottom of the sump.
I've revived a couple of bikes - and cars - which have sat for very long periods and have learned the hard way to be cynical about "clean" oil.

A new filter should go in at the same time - cut the old one open and you may get a surprise.....

Did a bit more polishing on the tank and side covers..mind you nthis is the original 39 year old paint. Theres a bit of sun fade on the top of the tank but im not gonna sweat that

Maybe a tad too much but the guy was locked up at 500. Other than the 1 missing mirror its a really cool little bike!!!

You did great with that bike. You are in a total win-win situation. These days with prices - just a shopping cart of groceries and a full tank of gas will run you a few hundred. I have bought and sold about 15 motorcycles since 2003 - not counting the four I currently own and in my experience is that there is always a buyer at any price and if patient you will eventually find that buyer. That being said - I think you will have no problem selling that bike for easily 3 times what you paid for it.
