Now this is how carbs should be.

When I first clapped eyes on an FZ 750 I knew right away this was how a bike should be built. with carbs where yo can get at 'em and no damn frame in the way:



The engine is canted forward about 45 deg so the intakes are almost straight up and down. The carbs are super easy to get off and put back on. All of 5 minutes tops with no fuss or muss.

The carbs are also Mikunis and very similar to those on our beloved GSs with the exception that a) the airmixture screws are impossible to access once on the engine b) the throttle linkage balance screws don't have any lock nuts to fiddle with. As a result, doing a synchro is also a snap and a lot easier than fiddling on the GSs with the frame backbone in the way.

while I am still a dyed in the wool fan of the GS, there is definitely something to be said about the layout of the FZ engine bay.

Looks like it..........mmmm.................can I get some Webers to fit in there????

Its actually an interesting and efficient engine design. With the engine canted forward and the head out of the way, the gas tank fits down into the space created. The weight of the gas sits lower and thus allows for a lower center of gravity.

The design of the engine too is different than the GSs as the generator (stator) is mounted on top of the crankcase not on the end of the crank. This makes for a narrower engine and allows a bit more of a lean angle. The generator and R/r are mounted together and I believe, from what I've read, they are more robust than the GSs stators. The downside is the generator is gear driven and robs a bit of horsepower but at 105 hp at the crank, it can afford to give up a few horseys.

The only downside to this setup that I've found is with the head. The plugs are hard to get at as the head is so "deep" and you have to remove the radiator to get in. Also with a 5 valve arrangement and shim and bucket adjustment, I believe adjusting the valves will be a real trial.

All in all I think its a good design, however.

but no sense in polishing the carb caps, bowls,,,,you don't see any of it....shame I tell ya.....

there are extended mixture screws available you can get. Eliminates the need of trying to blindly fit a screw driver in there.

Hardest part for me on the 1000 was getting the damn pull cable set in the linkage lol.

The valve adjustments are pretty straight forward, however get you measurements right the first time since you have to remove the cams to get to the shims.

Had to pull the cams a couple times when I did the 1000. And getting them back in and lined up correctly took some time.
