Today got the cam chain tensioner shaft rubber dampers and some needs orings ordered. Gonna try to get some more on this project going again since the Nighthawk is wrapped up. Probably be a few weeks till parts are in hand. Once the engine is reassembled and painted then I can start reassembly of the chassis and start making some meaningful gains.

Those darned 650's. After my sidecovers got destroyed in a fire, most clods thought my '73 Z1 was a KZ650. I guess that's why I'm so particular about having the "GS1100E" decals on my current covers.

Im gonna start taking the valves out today and do the rest of the head in preperation for the rest of the parts to arrive. Objective is to have everything prepped so when I drop in the cam chain tensioner dampers all I will have to do is set the top end and get it ready for paint. but we all know thats the plan...not necessarily how its gonna go!! Right???

            Chuck,
Did you plug all the various oil passages in the head before blasting? The 650 head has some blind oil passages that you can not easily clean out if you were to get media inside so you gotta be careful. PM me if you need more information.

Regarding the cam chain tensioner dampers, are you talking about those small rectangular pieces that are bonded to the pivot shaft for the tensioner shoe? If so, you can reuse the old ones. Just use some case sealer to attach them to the shaft.

I saw this post today and thought this was my lucky day! I have been on the hunt for a spoked KZ650. Oh well, nothing for sale here. Looking forward to the completion of this one.

I MotoFest the same as Aquafest Austin had in the 80s? I use to love to go to that. Unfortunately, I endoed my KZ1000 in San Marcos on the way back one year, after clipping my cousin's foot peg while not paying attention.

I had blasted it a while ago and have ran a hundred gallons of water thru the head and power washer nozzle down the holes from top and bottom and between the valve stems. It is what it is now but i am pretty confident they are flushed well and no sand grit is left inside.

Got the head disassembled ( took the valves out ) and ran yet more high pressure water down all the oil gallies and then lots of air from the compressor also. Tomorrow at some time will be clean up the carbon off the tops of the valves, get into the intake and exhaust ports and clean them up, lap the valves, install the new valve stem seals, and reassemble everything. Should be a good afternoons work.

Then will be time to get some attention to the cylinders. They have been blasted but they need the same water ran thru everything to flush any grit out.

Ed..the cam chain tensioner sprockets are what I needed the rubber dampers for. Shaft sets in a detent and has a flat spot that faces up. Rubber dampers go on the ends atop the flat spots.

Valve stems seals arrived this afternoon so its reassemble the head time and bench check valve clearances and order any shims needed. The next week and a half should see parts packages start showing up. Still need to source the lower cam chain roller and I should have everything to fully assemble the engine and get it ready for paint.

Head is back together and valve clearances checked. Gonna need a 2.45 and a 2.50 shim.

Todays venture was to remove the oil pan and flush the crank area free of any dust and debris that may have gotten in it over the last year after the head and jugs had been removed. Set up the shop vac and used suction to suck up anything that broke loose as I removed the remnants of the base gasket.

Didnt have the camera with me and my hands were oily so no pics. But the pan had the usual crud and sediment in it. Scrubbed that out and the pick up screen was washed clean too. Slow but sure shes moving a;long.

Engine assembled, degreaser scrubbed around to clean the Marvels off, power washed and blown dry with the compressor air. Waiting on a shim Nessism has for it and then I can set the cams and cam timing. Paint will be here tomorrow.
