I really need to find primer that will work good on the plastics. The boogers are from some sort of contamination that gets into the side covers and such. I sand them down to bare plastic, never touch anything with my fingers, use prep wipe, etc etc to be super careful about the surfaces..yet there will be little crazing and blistering when the colors start to be applied. Its very frustrating.

Did you sand it down to bare plastic? Reason I ask is because what you describe sounds like a reaction the new paint is having with the old paint.

Yes....used the palm sander and got it all right down to the black colored base plastic.

Did you use an epoxy primer?

How wet are you applying the primer, Chuck? If you're spraying it wet on the first few coats, it might be eating into the plastic. Try spraying 3-4 coats really dry and very light. Spritz it, walk away for 1/2 hr. Repeat until you get a build up, sand lightly, but not through anywhere, and maybe repeat process again until you have undisturbed, complete coverage. May take a couple of days to get it to lay down w/o problems.

Did you take some rubbing alcohol to the bare plastic after sanding and before doing any adhesion promoters or primers?Got that tip from an old painter.

Its a water based primer the supply house said to use. And there wasnt any epoxy on the plastics...that i could tell.

Humm, not sure about that water borne stuff. No experience. I've been using Transtar epoxy primer and it has working characteristics just like the PPG DPLF stuff I was using previously. Nice stuff, and cheap (relatively speaking). Get it from ebay. It sticks nicely to plastic too. That aside, the light dusting coat approach detailed by Larry is good. Once the primer sets up it should create a barrier coat. Hopefully it's also considered a SEALER. That's what you really need.

Reshot the base on the side cover and tail section tonight.

Finally getting somewhere. second coat of color is on all the parts. Gonna wet sand them all tomorrow night and get ready for a third coat and then let them set a few days to really gas out and cure before round 1 of the clear.

Base coats should be top coated within 24 hours (typically). You might want to find the data sheet for the paint you are using to double check.

Im good. Says "IF" they set OVER 24 hrs to wet sand before another application.

The scanner on the original paint under the seat area came back with Honda Candy Rudy Red....so there it is.
