      Larry..its VHT Gloss Black Epoxy paint in a rattle can. Durability is excellent. Calipers and pad carriers are Duplicolor Caliper paint. Monday I will be doing the driver footpegs, triple tree, and rims. Also plan on using some Back To Black on the plastic bits to bring them back around a bit.

          Orielleys didnt have Back To black so I got this Ultimate Black. Does about the same job. So heres todays 4 hours worth. Some chrome and plastic cleaning. Total of 17 1/2 hours into the projects as of now.

              Painted the tree, rotors, and rims today. Broke down shocks and started rehabbing them. Pics to be posted tomorrow at some point.

                Those are awesome bikes, great looking, mean sounding, and great torque range for a street ridden bike!

                The big downfall of them however is the transmission. The gearboxes dont take a ton of abuse. I think it may be 2nd and 3rd gears in particular, but I can't recall for certain. Information is widely available online on which areas to inspect thoroughly on a disassembly.

                  2nd gear would throw back to neutral under heavy accelerations. But the fix is simply swapping around the washers between gear to allow the dogs a better lock up. Can do it in about 10 minutes and a new left side engine cover gasket.

                    Yamaha had 2nd gear problems for yrs. & yrs. & yrs. Chuck, you're always pretty much up on this stuff, but are you sure just swapping around some washers would have fixed it?

                        It jumps out because the dogs werent long enough to lock up with the gear. By taking the back washer out and putting both in front it sets the gear back in and lets the dogs grab better. Some folks even had the rear of the gear milled a little for even more grip.

                          Got the engine painted today and finish the rims and rotors...but left the camera at the shop so I will download pics tomorrow at some point. 25 hours into the rebuild and thats from the time I started removing the tank to it being near ready to be reassembled. I should come in under 40 total hours. At least thats my perdicition anyway.

                            Used a wire wheel in a Dremel to clean the leading edges of the spokes and wet sanded the beads with 600 grit. Cleaned everything up and painted the rims. Theres one done next to an untouched one. Pretty big difference.
