Separating the V&H 4>1 for my GPz750

I need to separate the header from the megaphone on the V&H off my GPz750.


Somewhat rusty and chrome which looks out of place on the no chrome GPz IMO.I need to separate it to use my pipe straitening tool on this.

And to paint it black to better suit the GPz.Already tried the trio of penetrating oils I have,Lloyd's Moovit,PB Blaster and 50/50 ATF and alcohol.Also tried heat from a propane torch and spraying the ATF/alcohol on it while hot.What else does the GSR brain trust suggest?

how about a large torch and wedge the head pipes and twist the collector when cherry red at the joint?

Propane will not be hot enough. You need oxy acetylene. I had to do the same with my Yosh pipe and the only way was with oxy acetylene, all other attempts failed.

Great 3 people tell me the same thing(1 on KZR) and I know nobody with an oxy acetylene set up.May have to bite the bullet and pay someone to torch the jointWill try some other things before that though.

You could try using MAP gas (yellow canister) as it gets MUCH hotter than propane.

I guess but if I go the torch route the oxy acetylene is the way to go.I was using the propane to try to help the penetrating oil to get drawn into the joint as it cooled.It worked on the stuck swingarm pivot bolt.

Using my slide hammer to get the baffle out I had an unexpected result

Baffle still isn't out and has barely movedMay have to wreck the baffle to get it out but it will still be less than a new pipe!

Oxalic acid (deck wash) is an excellent derusting sauce. A small package in a plastic garbage can full of water works well.

As stated in the OP the plan is to take the chrome completely off or take it to the local U bast it place and rough the chrome up then paint it black.We have oxilc at work so I got some,with permission of courseMay use it to be sure all the rust is gone.
