how do I get a title for a title-less Bike?

Currently I'm in the middle of a basket case. I've acquired a frame from a more than generous user from this site. only problem is it does not have a title. Im in Virginia, can anyone chime in on how to go about this.

each state is different. In NJ, you need to have the "Abandoned vehicle" on your property for ...6 mos? a year? before starting paperwork.
call your DMV. I've found the workers on phone are a bit more pleasant than the witches behind the counter. Your mileage may vary :-)

You can get a Vermont registration by mail. Vermont doesn?t issue titles for vintage bikes. Then wait a year & get a Virginia title.

I believe Vermont has recently changed their policy in that you can get a temporary registration through the mail, but you have to take it to Vermont and get it verified for a permanent one.

Anything that is registered from out of state is now mandated to have a VIN verification up to 3 months after purchase or Registration is null in void... It needs to be verified by a VT DMV official. Also needs to pass state inspection if it is to be road worthy.
I've had to do it a couple times this year. the VIN checks is a big ole PITA now...

Interesting. Was curious so I checked out the Vermont DMV website.


The temporary registration looks like its only for bikes that are 15 years old and newer.

The website page for VIN verification has a date of 10/11/2016, so something presumably has changed.

But the actual VIN verification form still allows for out-of-state VIN verification.

Since October 11 was just a few weeks ago, it may be that the VIN verification form has not yet been updated to reflect new regulations.
There might be a relatively narrow time window where you can use the existing form because they haven?t issued the new one.

Oops. Must be half blind today. The website date of 10/11/2016 was over a year ago.


The form instructions are pretty picky for Vermont in-state VIN verification and not so picky for out-of-state VIN verification.

I know it's pulling F-ing teeth at the DMV office to register bikes...

I did it once but that was before 10/11/2016, and was for a 40+ year old bike.
The VIN verification was done by a local state inspection mechanic that I use.
