I would like to start with a statement that i am not very mechanically savy, that being said i am here to see if i can get some of the more machanically savy people on here to lend a hand, or in this case knowledge.
I have an 81 GS450L that started leaking oil at the end of last season. I finished out the season and parked her in a garage until this spring, now that it has warmed up enough for me to start working on it again I though I would start digging around to see what the cause of the oil leak might be. I took it to a local garage and they said that it was probably a head gasket leak or possibly a valve cover leak.
My question is, is there a way for me to easily determine which gasket it is that is leaking? If it is a valve cover i feel that i can porbably accomplish this repair myself. If it actually turns out to be a head gasket, i am not sure if it is something that i can do and i might need to turn else where for the needed repairs.
Thank you in advance for any tips, hints or help you might be able to offer up on this
. I will pick up some engine degreaser this weekend and (hopefully, weather permitting) i will clean off the engine and see if i can make a positive identification as to the location of the leak.
