How much gear oil for a 81 gs1000L

Just wondering how much gear oil for gear case and final drive
    Thanks, Bob

With the bike on the center stand, fill the final drive up to the bottom edge of the fill plug hole.

For the secondary drive, find the screw on the side, a few inches to the rear of the fill port. Remove this screw and fill the secondary drive until oil starts coming out this hole. Go slowly when you get close, because it takes forever to drain back down after overfilling.

All this is explained in the service manuals you can find on Bass Cliff's site. You can probably find the capacities too, so you can look up how much you need to buy.

I thought the GS1000L was a chain drive?
1982 GS1100E V&H "SS" exhaust, APE pods, 1150 oil cooler, 140 speedo, 99.3 rear wheel HP, black engine, '83 red

2016 XL883L sigpic Two-tone blue and white. Almost 42 hp! Status: destroyed, now owned by the insurance company. The hole in my memory starts an hour before the accident and ends 24 hours after.

If you are asking "how do know if full?"... that has been answered.

If you are asking how much to buy: A quart will do. (or at least it was on my 650G that needed gear oil in rear drive and gear case.)

Maybe get more response in other sections (there are not any shaft drive twin GSes).

Yes, it is, but the shaft-driven GLs just add to the confusion by not putting the "G" on the side cover.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the GLs have the "G" on the side cover. I know for a fact that my wife's 850 and my son's 650 don't.

How do you know its a GL then?

Thanks to all, I put 350cc in the gearbox (front of shaft) and I put 300cc in the rear (rear of shaft). It is actually classified as a gl, but does only have the L after the 1000.

                    If it's shaft-driven, it's a "G".

If it's shaft-driven and has a peanut tank, leading axle forks, stepped seat and chrome fenders, it's a "GL".
